I’ll take a stab at this and see what we can work out here. Since you addressed specifically teenage and young adult suicide rates, I’ll address that first. Of course the correlation between unemployment and suicide rates are also there for adults as well. https://twitter.com/readlinkola/status/1252329253049454594
Two things can be true at one: a functioning and growing global and nation economies do wonders for child mortality rates, whatever the cause, and the will be modern problems to a modern world. Clearly the spikes in suicide, depression and self-harm rates among Gen Z is one.
Throughout the 20th Century we saw that the greatest form of an economy is capitalism, in one form or another. Child mortality rates sunk while wealth grew. I’m not suggesting capitalism of any form is the way forward, although I do believe a form of it will be most beneficial.
The larger modern problems we have now is the environment, inequality, materialism, and corruption. Suicide rates among youth is one of many problems that go seemingly go unnoticed. But I will point out these problems aren’t unique to capitalism. It’s a fact through any system.
Capitalism has these problems, but what it does is produces the greatest amount of wealth. All the other systems don’t, they just produce inequality, corruption, etc. The rich is getting richer, but the poor are getting richer too.
Future of capitalism is up for debate. You don’t want a state over regulating the market and taking the magic out of it. You don’t want a completely unregulated economy w/o progress, dynamism or improvement. Dynamism/Decency is one of the many debates in the future of capitalism.
My point is, we can not attribute suicide rates in youth or unemployed to capitalism. If unemployment is what causes suicide in the life of a capitalist man, there will always be another cause for suicide in EVERY other system. Possibly much higher.
Now for the correlation of suicide rates and youth. Clearly nothing we can attribute to capitalism. In Gen Z, I’ll suggest two reasons why suicide rates are rising. (1) increase in social media usage among pre-teens and teenagers. (2) decrease in free-play and risk experience.
Social Media: Clealry you have seen the increase in self-harm and suicide rates among Gen Z. This is only prevalent in females. Female bullying is social, male bullying is physical. Social media opens a constant beauty contest, which is linked to hating ones self while comparing.
Decrease of free-play and risk experience: Peter Gray has been one of the great proponents in this theory. I won’t explain too much, but I’ll leave a link to a paper he wrote in Psychology Today and his case for explaining the link I mentioned. https://www.psychologytoday.com/files/attachments/1195/ajp-decline-play-published.pdf
IN SUM: Capitalism isn’t to blame for the increase in suicide in the youth and grown. Capitalism has its flaws, but is our best bet to continue to improve living conditions throughout the world. Social media, decrease of free-play and risk experience may be to blame. Enjoy.
