Between The Black•ish shows and BlackAF, Kenya Barris seems to believe the near antithesis of being Black is being rich so the most interesting and unique story is about the black upper class.
He’s sure that’s enough complexity so he delivers bland characters, tropes, & stories.
I’m not saying he thinks being rich and black isn’t possible but that the concepts are naturally opposed or difficult to reconcile and the simple fact that a character is both means that they are complex.
Goofy Semi-cool dad
Savvy but somehow uncool mom
Popular older daughter
Socially inept older son
Then cute and bossy younger kids
+ Grandparents deriding the parents to add comedy.

Anatomically it’s just The George Lopez Show with hints of Home Improvement but less funny
There are none of the nuances that it touts. I would never say things like Black•ish fill, in the modern-day, the shoes of black sitcoms of the 90s and 00s. It’s not unwatchable, I watched some of it and had fun, it’s just typical and fails to develop a depth over time
And as much as I’m making this thread no one asked for because I just watched a few BlcakAF clips that were 🤢 I’m also making it because I am tired of telling older white people that I want to get into television and they ask me if I’ve seen Black•ish.
