A little thread of recently released Australian books that are missing out on all the usual hoopla thanks to iso-life. These are all great and you should buy them all! (I'm having a very productive work day, thanks for asking)
First up - @m_riwoe's Stone Sky Gold Mountain, a beautiful, at time heartbreaking, look at lives of Chinese goldminers in the North Queensland goldrush. It's vivid and warm and the writing is lovely.
The Inland Sea by @madeleine_watts is a bleak and grimy coming of age story set amidst the steady creep of climate-change and anxiety. It's almost suffocating at times, but powerful and timely.
Erin Hortle's stunning debut The Octopus and I blends complex questions about the human body with thoughtful explorations of non-human consciousness (and some really stunning writing about Tassie nature)
I'm sure you've all already bought @RahrSavage's Blueberries, which is deeply insightful memoir, filled with wit, flair and an incredible intelligence.
The Coconut Children by Vivian Pham is a surprisingly upbeat romance set in Cabramatta during the heroin glut. Makes me sick that a 19 year old wrote this - I was drinking passion pop and playing video games at 19.
I read @laurahelenmb's Cherry Beach in a single day - it's a really lovely look at love and friendship and figuring out who you are. Laura writes with such warmth and grace. I adored it.
Finally, the incomparable The Animals in That Country by @laurajeanmckay, which is unlike anything you've ever read before. Set amidst a pandemic that lets the infected understand the animals around them, it will rewire your brain as you're reading.
Adding Fathoms by @rebeccagiggs to this thread - a really fine book about whales (and everything else).
You can follow @wtb_Michael.
