Among the things that strike me watching Alex Garland& #39;s #Devs is the extraordinarily effective use of music cues. The final ep. starts with a track that samples Steve Reich& #39;s & #39;Come Out& #39; over a cgi [?] landscape. It& #39;s a perfect example of the show& #39;s aural/visual shocks... 1/7
Another is in ep 2 where Low& #39;s & #39;Congregation& #39; scores an otherwise silent montage of Lily& #39;s horrific reactions to learning of her boyfriend& #39;s fate. Simply superb in context and another inspired choice... 2/7
The link between Garland& #39;s work and contemporary art works is another point of fascination. In #ExMachina there& #39;s a really interesting nod to a work of art in this scene... 3/7
Which appears to be a reference to a work by the artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg& #39;s & #39;Stranger Visions& #39; from 2012. 4/7
A Google for art references turned up an interesting interview with Garland about set decoration and production design which discusses specific art references in Ex Machina 5/7 https://www.setdecorators.org/?name=Alex-GarlandEX-MACHINA&art=directors_chair_Alex_Garland">https://www.setdecorators.org/...
In Devs the golden columns around the lab building seem like a reference to land art, and de Maria& #39;s & #39;Lightening Field& #39; in particular 6/7
I haven& #39;t quite worked out if the glowing forest is set design or an actual art work, but it sure looks like one. There& #39;s a piece on it in Architectural Digest... 7/7 https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/devs-fx-series-set-design">https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/dev...
