the sad part is apparently this situation isn& #39;t even unheard of, despite it being rare. sit tight folks bc im gonna be connecting the dots between this, death magnetic, and another victim of the "loudness war" slipknot& #39;s vol 3 and how bricking ruins otherwise great music
now for those out of the loop let me explain what& #39;s going on with mick:
bethesda prematurely released the ost for doom eternal to collector& #39;s edition owners and fans are noticing some things are off, starting with mixing issues seen on bfg division 2020 (right) vs the og (left)
when this was brought to his attention, mick almost immediately took to twitter to speak out about how he only mixed a handful of songs to a fan. later on a conversation with a fan showed up on the doom subreddit, basically sealing the fate between mick and bethesda
to elaborate, the mixing isn& #39;t necessarily the issue- the songs still sound IMO fairly decent- but rather a completely different person took over mick& #39;s work (seemingly without consent) and made it into something he wasn& #39;t happy with. details are still kinda sparse but yeah
now this is where the deja vu comes into play: let& #39;s take slipknot, a still relatively young band who prior to 2004 had already released 2 albums under a label, their self titled debut and iowa. these guys were becoming huge, but their fame also almost led to their downfall
towards the end of recording iowa, the band members fucking HATED each other and nearly destroyed themselves with an inhumane amount of drugs and alcohol. for their next album they needed a moment of rehabilitation for themselves, and this is where producer rick rubin enters
while the album ended up essentially rehabilitating the band and the mates as well, recording and producing was a challenging experience. they "worked" with rubin to the best of their ability, but the issue was that rubin just wasn& #39;t there for most of the sessions
frontman corey taylor reminisced on the recording of the album, basically saying that rubin would just show up for 45 minutes a week, sit on a couch, and bring in a mic so that he wouldn& #39;t have to move. he didn& #39;t care much for what the band was doing so he kinda just phoned it in
what followed was a project that the band wasn& #39;t thrilled with but was glad it was off their hands. corey wasn& #39;t happy with the vocals that showed up on the album and the album itself... well i& #39;ll just play what the album version of vermilion sounds like vs the terry date mix
ever since corey DID say he wanted to make amends with rubin back in 2016, but nothing has come of that. the album also became a defining part of the band& #39;s career, partially with it cementing their legacy in popular metal with such singles as duality and before i forget
how these two stories converge is through musicians essentially losing control of the art they worked on and having it be meddled with against their own will by someone else only for it to come out sounding less than desirable. and this isn& #39;t even the end of rick rubin yet
cue dramatic entrance for metallica! if you don& #39;t know who these guys are that& #39;s your problem, but basically these guys in 2008 are among some of the biggest rock/metal groups in the planet and the fame in their head has been in their head ever since the mid 90& #39;s one could argue
these guys also had their own production problems in the past as well: first off with the release of ...and justice for all, which nixes jason newsted& #39;s bass from the mix (as instructed by frontman james hetfield and drummer lars ulrich) and resulted in an empty sounding record
next, with the band& #39;s arugably lowest point, st anger. the album itself sounds decent but you& #39;ll notice very quickly that the snare sounds a lot more... um, metal. this was due to lars "turning off" the snares on the drums, resulting in a garbage can sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCu3z1yX1h8">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
and finally: death magnetic. like slipknot& #39;s vol 3, the album was produced by rick rubin. unlike the band& #39;s previous aforementioned album, it& #39;s meant to be a return to form for them with the inclusion of guitar solos and a more thrash like sound, unlike the alt metal precursor
so what exactly went wrong? initially, not much. despite their previous longtime collaborator bob rock leaving, rubin was MUCH more committed to getting the band back in shape and introduced a new writing/recording process for them which cut out the downtime for recording
when the album released, it was littered with tons of compression and brickwalled production that left the album sounding like an absolute nightmare to some people. what& #39;s even more puzzling is how, in comparison, the guitar hero tracks actually sounded BETTER than the cd release
turns out rubin took creative control over the album mix according to ulrich, however he stressed that he was satisfied withthe album& #39;s sound.

in 2015, a remastered version of the album released on itunes with improved dynamic range and lack of distortion was released. lmfao
and if you& #39;re thinking rubin is a hack, he kinda isn& #39;t. he also helped produce fantastic sounding albums for bands like slayer, system of a down and even the strokes, however was too caught up with sounding as loud as possible to focus on how the music sounded with certain albums
so in the end: what do an australian man, a nine person band, and an 80& #39;s thrash metal band all have in common? they were all victims of having their art altered against their own will which resulted in poorly mastered messes of music they weren& #39;t satisfied with. it& #39;s sad, really
i don& #39;t think overly distorted music can be a bad thing and it can sound amazing if implemented willfully and tastefully. it& #39;s just that the issue is these examples all ignored that and opted to hurt the eardrums more than enhance it bc they prioritized volume over art
and what about the type of compression that doesn& #39;t hurt the eardrums? that& #39;s just poor mixing/mastering, resulting in rather flat production that makes certain instruments indistinguishable from the noise

thank you for coming to my ted talk. i& #39;m very passionate about this lol
