the golden rule to mastering your own curly hair is FINDING OUT YOUR HAIRâS POROSITY. Porosity is essentially how porous your hair shaft is (can water enter my hair shaft easily/dry easily, or does it take forever to get soaking wet).
there are ways to find out if you have a high, low, or normal porosity! I personally did the glass water trick. Take a ~clean~ strand of hair and drop it in a glass of room temp water. if it drops, high porosity, stays in the middle = normal, floating at the top = low porosity
If youâre like me and you have low porosity hair, HEAT and warm water will be your best friend. HEAT will open your hair shaft up and allow moisture to come in. this is why I spend 15 minutes letting warm water run through my hair before I start to wash it!
heat your hair products up as well. I used to heat up my hair products a lot more when I had more time but as long as the products arenât ice cold, my hair is fine.

now what if you have high porosity? it means your hair shaft open and closes very easily. that means water enters easily but it leaves even easier. unlike low porosity hair that locks in water for forever (takes 24+ hours for my hair to air dry)
to combat high porosity hair, you NEEEEED thicker sealant oils and products to help keep the moisture sealed in your hair shaft. itâs the only way or you hair will be dry af after a couple days. lower porosity, typically you donât need thick products. unless itâs a preference
