In 1989, I was born in Switzerland because my parents were pursuing their PhDs there and got pregnant. Because I had an older sister and China’s One Child Policy, that meant that they couldn’t go home to their friends and family and reasonably have a career.
When I was 2 years old, we moved to the United States so my parents could raise us in a country whose ambition matched theirs. One where their kids could be free to pursue whatever dreams might get into their little brains
In the 7th grade, I naturalized to be a US Citizen in what still remains one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made. I had always rooted for the US in the Olympics and the World Cup. I’d never been anything but American.
Four years ago, a xenophobic, hateful person somehow ascended to the highest office in our land, which spurred me into a new dream. I vowed that I would fight like hell for the very things that he spoke out against, because put to that point, I wasn’t doing enough.
Two years ago, I decided to run for office, and I worked my butt off to win that race, and it’s from that soap box I get to speak today.

This President makes me mad as hell, especially when he talks about immigration. Immigrants are the best of this country.
We do nothing but contribute. We add labor, we add music, we add incredible food.

We add new colors to the already beautiful tapestry that is this country.

Every time he talks about immigration, he’s just throwing ink stains on that.
Stains come out, though. It’ll take some work, and a lot of that work will come from immigrants. I promise you, and I promise him: people like us are never going to stop fighting to make this country a better place for our kids. Like my parents did.
Every time he speaks, I think about the little kids that he’s barring from this country. Little kids that probably would end up a lot like me: proud Americans who want to go into public service for public good.

My fight will continue for them, because others fought for this guy.
