a brief list of the topics covered in witness album, an album Katy said would be the start of "purposeful pop" but the media slandered because Katy didn't fit their image anymore and everyone oversaw because they couldn't comprehend the clever metaphors used in it.
let's start with the cover bcoz it's honestly one of the most powerful covers of all time, not just because of its imagery but its message as well.

it's a very simple message beautifully embedded. there is an eye in Katy's mouth which signifies she is going to speak whatever+
+she sees. most of the times people tend to sugarcoat their words and even fail to speak up about the wrongdoings around them. it is a message that she is not going to be silenced
first track: witness

the journey of the album starts with Katy in a low state. she's asking her partner whether they would be by her sides even when times get rough. an insecurity is shown, probably due to her past relationships.
second track: hey hey hey

the lyrics talk about a woman establishing her place equal to her male counterparts. "feminine and soft but still a boss" is honestly one of the best lyrics of the album. it has a video with equally powerful messages on the same topic.
third track: roulette

it talks about letting go of the insecurities for some time and doing what Katy really wants to. she's ready to take risks in her life for the first time in a long time. it could be applicable for both her career and personal life.
fourth track: swish swish ft. Nicki Minaj

the song was projected to be written in response to bad blood although Katy has refused it multiple times. it's a clapback to her haters who doubted her. the mv celebrates Katy's flaws and shows her to be the real winner in the end.
fifth track: déjà vu

talks about the monotony of a relationship and the repeated arguments of the same topic over and over with her lover. uses clever metaphors. for eg, the Rubik's cube mentioned in the chorus is a symbol of progression, similar to what Katy wants.
sixth track: power

a feminist anthem. Katy is telling her former partner that she is not ashamed of doing things in a way different than what they expected. she's ready to "glow", has finally realised her worth(a goddess) and is ready to fight back, whenever needed.
seventh track: mind maze

I'll start with saying it has AMAZING production. talks about her depression and the feeling of being stuck in her thoughts, being able to neither get out nor fight them. she considers herself an enemy and wants to find herself but does not know how.
eighth track: miss you more

a ballad where Katy accepts she misses her former partner. Katy has previously said she takes pictures of her crying to remind herself of the bad times when she starts to feel something about her lover once again. the track echoes this sentiment.
ninth track: chained to the rhythm ft. Skip Marley

a lead that tells the world she isn't afraid to speak up. rather, she mocks the public for having a blind eye towards problems. her disappointment in the newly elected govt is also evident. yet, she hopes things'll get better.
tenth track: tsunami

the song uses tsunami and waves as a metaphor for sex. she is talking about a post-orgasmic feeling and being on a high. the lyrics and productions are, hands down, genius.
eleventh track: bon appétit ft. Migos

a sexually liberating song for a woman who has been previously objectified by the society. the video depicts the same topic. she is no longer bound by the rules of patriarchy and can do with her body as she feels.
twelfth track: bigger than me

another song that uses the political backdrop. Katy has realised that she is part of a social revolution that the world was going through in 2016-17. it refers to the political awareness in youth and movements like #MeToo and women's march.
thirteenth track: save as draft

another song that talks about a past relationship. however, a maturity is shown like the one shown in 'it takes two' from her previous album, PRISM. Katy lets go of her former lover and has started to try and move on, even if it's painful.
fourteenth track: pendulum

a classic Katy Perry empowerment anthem, she used a choir here to give a hint of gospel. the song also has spiritual hints. it gives a hope that time changes eventually and to fight the challenges with a high head, without changing yourself.
fifteenth track: into me you see

the standard album ends with a beautiful cohesion. the journey started with an insecurity whereas now Katy has found someone with whom she's ready to open herself. the into me you see-intimacy wordplay is brilliant.
DELUXE TRACKS

sixteenth track: dance with the devil

the devil here is alcoholism. Katy fought addiction and alcoholism when she was depressed. another vulnerability is shown here. she tries to escape the 'poison' that she considers alcohol.
seventeenth track: act my age

this song tackles the concept of ageism. Katy refuses to act the way everyone wants her to because of her age(30s). she poses a question-how old would you be if you didn't know how old you really were? and ends the album at this note
to sum up: cohesively, witness is Katy's best album. it shows a mature side of Katy that was earlier not shown to the public. her growth is clearly visible. it definitely did not deserve any hate it recieved.
