(Thread) ok I just took a really long (hopefully inconspicuous) bathroom break at work to finish my first listen-through the new @elite_gz record and it’s so amazing and I have so many feelings I just needed to type them out so plz forgive me for being sappy
I’ve never played final fantasy, but inasmuch as I understand it, Jaime’s comparison between the FF7 remake and this album seems really spot on. The ā€œmain pop girl 2019ā€ is like really fertile soil that an entirely new organismā€”ā€œpain mop girl 2020ā€ā€”has grown out from.
The whole album is gorgeous. It’s amazing to me how all these artists from very different backgrounds came together to reimagine these songs, and in a sense precipitated out all these genre influences that have been present in default genders music since the beginning.
Another analogy (sorry) is like ā€œmain pop girl 2019ā€ was the prism, the contributors were like the light, and ā€œpain mop girl 2020ā€ is the light refracted out of the other side. It’s really cool to me the way that inspiration can beget inspiration can beget inspiration.
I think my favorite part of this record is how cohesive everything sounds even though basically each song was an individual project undertaken by a different artist. And (speaking for myself at least) we didn’t really coordinate w each other outside of contacting Jaime.
Of course we were all reinterpreting songs from the same record, so some amount of cohesion is expected. But I feel like there’s something deeper outside of that connecting each of the songs together. I feel it’s really symbolic of the ecosystem of queer and trans artists that
Exist on twitter rn. We all experiment with very different sound palettes. All our music is informed by different artists as influences. Outside of being a fan of a few of the other artists featured on this, I don’t really know them, nor have I really spoken to them. And yet...
Certain through-lines connect our music together. Idk what it is. Sometimes I think it’s the vocal processing. Sometimes I think it’s the themes our songs focus on. Sometimes I think it’s the walls noise lingering in the background, but it’s hard to put a finger on.
But I love it, and it’s the fuel that inspires me to create. More and more lately, I’m realizing how there is this whole world of really inspiring and interesting artists that exist outside of both mainstream and indie-blog consciousness. And they’re making the best music rn.
And I really appreciate Jaime for facilitating this work that sonically represents a small piece of that community. I’m so honored to be alongside artists I’ve admired for a while, and through this I’ve found even more cool artists I want to connect with and hear their music.
It’s really amazing. I wanna attempt a highly collaborative album inspired by this someday. This was such an awesome thing to be a part of. I’ll treasure the experience forever.
