Meat processing facilities don’t require many specialized skills or high education credentials, and hire people who may not be fluent or confident in their ability to speak English. This is where many within my family ended up when they arrived to Canada.
I still know plenty of folks whose family members work in meat processing plants. There’s a human face to this outbreak in my head. And it’s my aunts, my friends mothers, and others.
Cargill is a large, sophisticated organization, and was definitely aware of the concerns regarding Covid 19 and the physical distancing measures to ensure the lives of its workers and loved ones were protected. But, if these stories are true, they disregarded them on purpose.
Even @DevinDVote turned a blind eye it seems. Didn’t check in or enforce regulations, took Cargill at its word. Now look at the result. Families are devestated. If physical distancing measures is good enough for your families, how come it isnt for unskilled workers in meat plants
How come the lives of those working in these plants — people of colour and migrants to this country, overwhelmingly women — of secondary concern to the availability of cheap meat? The answer lies in the question.
It’s also difficult to convey how desperate folks are for these jobs. They aren’t in a position to find alternative employment. I had an aunt who didnt eat meat because of her religion. But, she worked at a meat plant for years because it’s the only paid work she could find.
These are vulnerable folks. Folks that were forced to go into harms way because plant owners and this govt felt that their lives could be gambled with during this midst of a pandemic. It should an anger every Albertan.
There will likely be more deaths and infections, all of which could be avoided. We need an independent inquiry. We need to get to the bottom of what happened. We need answers. We also need accountability. This needs to be explained https://twitter.com/devindvote/status/1251643360747511808?s=21
