I keep seeing people dunk on the guy who was like "would you write a ~graphic love scene~ for MONEY?" because he apparently forgot that romance/erotica/fanfic writers exist and it's making me think about what felt like the fundamental problem w/Shipwreck (the fanfic-reading show)
the format is six writers/funny people/funny writers write a short piece of erotic fiction based on a media property (usually they're each given a specific character I think) and then someone reads each bit for a crowd, who votes on the best one. Sounds fun, right?
EXCEPT!
this is a comedy show, right? or at least meant to be entertaining. I went to 3-4 of these and with the exception of maybe four people total (generously) no one seemed to approach the exercise with a "how can I write about sex in a funny/entertaining way" sort of spirit behind it
It was nearly always "oh LORD can you imagine??? writing...about SEX? that's something dumb idiots do!" so everything was purposely grotesque (sometimes with a lot of "can you imagine someone with [bodily attribute] being sexy or sexual" vibes) or otherwise intentionally bad
hey you know what's really hard? making yourself vulnerable enough to write about people making a sexual connection in a way that doesn't feel like you're purposefully fucking it up because you can't bear the thought of being sincere
each one of these events wound up feeling like
the joke was "god can you believe some people write erotic fanfic for real? good thing that's not us, right? we all know this is fake???" which is a shitty theme for your event tbh
I am not going to claim I'm actually good at writing a humorous sex scene because writing humor is HARD and while I have had instances of cracking the fuck up during sex I haven't written one yet
but I've written a lot of porn in the past couple years and some of it is good??
and part of what made it good is I realized I just had to fucking do it and be vulnerable and run the risk of someone knowing something about me once they'd read it
I mean I literally thought I would be physically ill and was shaking when I posted my first fanfic on ao3 because even though it was pretty tame it felt SO PERSONAL, so I get that being vulnerable sucks sometimes, but it's not a good way to make entertainment either
anyway if you think people writing fanfic or whatever sexual content they want to bring into the world is pathetic and inherently amusing I don't know why you're following me but you suck, get outta here
I don't know if shipwreck even exists anymore but: 👎
wait I did get my moby dick and mr darcy condoms at one of the shows though. so that was ok.
