Why your viral tweets don't give you the results you want

[A Thread]
Before I get started, I want to say that I'm not the viral tweet expert.

I don't have a library of viral tweets that I've written.

I have, however, spent a good bit of time studying tweets that went viral.

I've also collaborated with accounts that have had viral tweets.
One question most people have is "What's considered a viral tweet?"

My answer: It depends

In most cases, I'd consider the specificity of the tweet when considering a tweet viral.

Is the tweet targeted as a specific audience? or is it something everyone can agree to?
If a tweet is ultra-specific, meaning only a small number of accounts on Twitter would understand the tweet, a viral tweet may be 500 retweets.

If the tweet is about something broad, like dogs, one may say 20k retweets would classify it as "viral"

If it hits the explore page✔
What makes a tweet go viral? It depends.

One thing I've noticed is the tweet compels those who see it to want to share it.

The tweet must resonate with the reader so much they feel obligated to share.

This is seen in ALL areas on Twitter.
One must be able to write great tweets or create content that makes people want to share it with others who can relate to the content.

You ever get a tweet/video/article sent to you from someone with a message saying "I thought about you when I saw this".

When it comes to capitalizing off viral tweets, think of its relevancy like YouTube videos.

If the video is extremely broad, you need a lot of views to monetize.

If the video is niche specific, you can earn more with less views.

Now, let's talk about YOU.
So, you wrote a tweet.

It's getting engagement.

Oh, it's getting more engagement.

Oh shit, it's going viral!

You think to yourself, this would be a great time to plug my [business/product/Instagram/newsletter/mix-tape]

You plug it, and..... you get low to no engagement.
Does this sound familiar to any of you?

Have you wondered why this happens?

Don't worry, I'm about to break this down like a recipe.
Your success in monetizing Viral tweets comes from 2 things:

1. Timing

2. Fit

They both need to work in sync for maximum success.
Let's talk about Timing.

Viral tweets have a lifespan.

No, I don't know the lifespan, but when it dies - you will know.

Consider a viral tweet like throwing a ball in the air - the ball may get thrown HIGH (engagement peak), but it eventually comes down.
The mistake most people make is waiting until a tweet reaches what they 'think is viral' then deciding to plug a promotional tweet.

In most cases, by then it's too late.

Don't think only of the retweets you get. Consider the impressions.
Impression - view

One retweet may result in 100 - 10,000+ impressions *how many of that person's followers saw the retweet.

10,000 retweets can... well, you get the point.

Waiting until the retweets are high decreases your chance of getting eyes on your promotional tweet.
I get it, not many people expect their tweets to go viral.

In most cases, they don't know what to do so they waste opportunity with a "follow me on Instagram" or "I don't have anything to promote so..."

I honestly don't care what you do when you have the microphone.
You aren't most people though, you have a business/podcast/product/mother's catering service to promote.

You should consider every impression as a potential customer or client.

With this in mind, start plugging your promotional tweets faster.
So, what's the solution?

Start plugging your promotional tweets earlier.

If you do this manually, I'd determine a benchmark for impressions and put your promo tweet after the impression mark is passed.

"If this tweet gets 20k+ impressions, I'm going to tag my promo tweet."
If you want to save the time, let @hypefury take care of it for you.

Hypefury gives users the ability to auto-plug their promotional tweets once a certain parameter is met.

By having a system in place [ @hypefury] to auto-promote after hitting x number of retweets, you can grow your email list, get more sales, and save time.
Let's talk about fit.

I see many people promoting under their viral tweets.

I'm sure they get lots of link clicks. Lots.

I'm also sure not many of those clicks lead to a sale.

Why? You guessed it.

The product doesn't fit.
FIT = the product being promoted should be in some relation to the contents of the original tweet that went viral.

A viral tweet about a dogs followed by a promo about men's hair loss will not do well.

Sure some men who are experiencing hair loss may see the tweet - so what?
To maximize success, you need a promotional tweet that relates to the original tweet.

Viral tweet about stocks? - referral link for a trading platform

Viral tweet about brooms? - affiliate link for broom on Amazon

Viral tweet about something related to your business? - 😉
If you stick to your personal brand, you will have many opportunities to promote your business under your high engaging tweets.

If an off brand tweet goes viral, don't stress it.

If you must promote - find a way to make it relate.
That's all I have.

Key takeaway: When it's your time to shine and you have the mic, act fast and make it fit.
