The Sixth Ranger idea clicks so well with western audiences because Sentai is built primarily on cooperation, teamwork, self-sacrifice, team-building... Then you have this guy who comes in who's Better Than Everyone Else, like he even has his own big robot and all his own toys? https://twitter.com/TheMusicalPaws1/status/1252291198645153797
and the same is often true for Sentai, but the individualism of the Sixth Ranger is often proposed as an actual detriment that needs to be overcome to bring the new member into the team
The Sixth ranger is a new member that wants to JOIN the team (Shinkengold, Gokaisilver, etc.) or a mentor figure meant to bring new skills to the team from a position of authority or specialization (Magishine) or a bitter Rival who eventually learns to accept the team
Jason hits the show and he's basically positioned from the jump as Jason's equal, but also in a way where a lot of his arc post-introduction is handwaived and he just REMAINS at that spot. Burai's status equal to Geki was something that had to be actively DEALT with
Burai and Geki have an actual arc where Burai's role in relation to the team is defined by elements of the story that develop as the show goes on. Burai as a character changes and grows, and has an impact on others, and has a really bittersweet, tragic culmination
and this isn't to say one is more mature than the other, both are very much CHILDRENS shows, but they're both very much childrens shows that wear their ideology on their sleeve about individualism and cooperation and what that means
Zyuranger is probably the first Sentai that is really blatantly kid-inclusive not just in its tone but in its episode structure. That show is LOUSY with children, and it uses Geki and Burai's relationship to tell stories about siblings, trust, respect, familial sacrifice, etc.
It even uses its toy dinosaurs to tell stories about loss and grieving, in ways that are really surprising
anyway i'm now on cooldown for Sentai opinions (but Rider opinions are on the GCD)
why this lady carrying around a humagear dick AND balls
Toushiki Inoue didn't write the episode but he broke into the office and inserted the metal dick and balls into the script
IT'S HIGH QUALITY
