Most Hon. BroGad say #TanAhYuhYaad. But we are running from a spike in our electricity bills cuz we cyaa afford that right now. Here are some #EnergyConservation tips to help keep those bills under control. #Thread
1/ Stop open the fridge every minute! When you let in hot air, you burn more energy to cool it back down. Someone at home can be the fridge police. Know what you want and don't leave it open when unpacking groceries.
2/ Also, check the seal of your refrigerator and ensure it is properly closed.
3/ Use up natural lighting. Open up your windows and doors (but lock the grill).
4/ #FlipTheSwitch and turn off lights when not in use.
5/ You don't need all your devices plugged in/charging all the time. Plug out what's not in use.
6/ Not to mention, the a/c. Time well hot. But we can conserve by using blackout curtains to reduce thermal energy loss.
7/ Some plants like Aloe Vera, Pothos, Snake plant, palms and ferns can have a cooling effect indoors and also act as natural air purifiers. #PlantParenthood
8/ Check the seal of air-conditioned rooms. Are there spaces around doors and windows or to other rooms? This can increase energy consumption to meet the temp. .
9/ For the people with dryers but you still have a clothesline... if you're home and have more time, use up the sunshine, it's free🌞
10/ Also, remember to clean out the lint trap and the vent, as this can reduce efficiency.
11/ Consider cooking meals in advance if you have an electric stove.
12/ Try and cut down on microwave use.
Thaw frozen foods in advance, safely in the fridge and avoid using the microwave (or other appliances).
Stop procrastinating! (Draping myself). Try and do your work during work time😉 and avoid staying up too late, burning more energy and also setting yourself up to feel more tired in the morning.
Also, try and keep a designated work station (and not several) to avoid leaving the lights, tv, fan, a/c, etc on in other rooms
Mix up your leisure activities. Unplug, read a book, less screen time, play some board games now and then.
For my Naturalistas and Hair Journey-ers, we're home now and can spend more time on wash day and hair care routines. Give your hair some extra TLC and go heat-free for a while and use less heat styling tools. Try air-drying your hair.
Sun too hot to be using electric water heaters rather than solar. @TheNHT has a solar water heater loan for contributors https://www.nht.gov.jm/loans/need-a-loan/solar-water-heater
Check your light bulbs and appliances for @ENERGYSTAR ratings and consider upgrading to more energy-efficient ones. Read your energy labels.
Inspect your light bill. Ask questions. Make sure you're getting actual bills. Learn more about how you are billed https://www.jpsco.com/jps-home/understanding-your-bill/ and contact @myJPSonline. They have a new mobile app as well.
You can take it a step further and consider incorporating renewables like PV Solar to supplement your home's energy.
Finally, consider getting a home energy audit done to help identify where you're consuming the most to reduce your bill. We have quite a few Certified Energy Mangers (CEMs) locally. Contact the Jamaica Society of Energy Engineers (JSEE) for more info at [email protected]
Some of these things may seem obvious but check out your home. You might not realize where you're burning money. Hope this helps someone🙂
