Talked at length with our circ supervisor today about what kinds of changes we may see whe the libraries reopen. I hope that those above me are already putting plans in place. The safety of patrons and staff are critically important, and so is patron privacy. 1/
Plexiglass at reference and circ? Troubleshooting on the PACs with gloves and PPE, then sanitizing after each use? Retrieving specific books for patrons and then otherwise letting them browse by themselves? I am missing a lot, I realize. But I think about this a lot. 2/
Are there other higher-tech options I haven’t considered? And how do we inform patrons that these precautions are necessary for maintaining a safe(r) library environment for all? How might this affect the patron-staff interaction - will it have a less positive effect? 3/
On a side note, we received a nice note from a patron who told our staff to “keep our chins up” and “we will get through this.” It was sweet to read. We all want to make the library safe(r) for all our patrons when we are able to welcome them back. 4/
