Percy Jackson’s books were created to be a representation for Rick Riordan’s son, Haley Riordan, who was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia at 9.
With the intention of making Haley feel good about being neurodivergent and approach the reading, Percy Jackson came out. And being asked by Haley himself, Riordan made Percy Jackson stories into books and been inspiring readers all around the world.
In an interview with The Guardian, Rick Riordan spoke about the gratitude he receives from families and young children talking about how Percy Jackson changed their lives.
"I get an enormous number of emails and letters from families who have children who are ADHD or dyslexic. One of my favourites is a young girl who wrote to me and said she used to be ashamed that she had dyslexia, but now she has read the Percy Jackson books she wears that as a
badge of honour. And that means the world to me. There are so many other children out there like my son who are struggling with these issues and feel there is something wrong with them, and there's not. It's simply a different way of processing information."
One of those kids is his own son, Haley Riordan affirmed: "Percy has changed my life. You read a lot of books and none of them have a hero who is dyslexic or has ADHD – it's always perfect people in a perfect world doing perfect things.
Percy is, in fact, very flawed and he has to fight against that and at the same time fight monsters."
Although in the books of the universe of Percy Jackson, or Riordanverse, has long been a reference in representativeness, many people still do not know how everything was created or even that Percy has ADHD and dyslexia, and not just him as most characters.
We created this thread with the intention of reinforcing this information but also for you to see how it is for people with TDHA and /or dyslexia in front of this figure that is Percy Jackson.
For this interview, 4 people were interviewed. All having ADHD and / or dyslexia and all are readers of Percy Jackson.
We wanted to thank the people who participated in our little interview here and also ask you demigods who have ADHD and/or dyslexia if you liked the way it was treated? Would they change anything? And what impact did books have on your life?
And this space here is for authors who include neurodiverse characters to indicate here their works or even a work by another author that you liked. We hope this thread will have a positive impact on you.
