signing up to pledge money monthly to the movements i really care about is a small reminder of the commitment i am making towards change. it isn't much, but it's a willingness to support the people doing the work. i encourage anyone who can to make this commitment.
financial support is an interesting one when it comes to attempting to work within the designated community and resist seeking financial aid from bodies that come with restrictions, barriers and modes of evaluation that don't further the work that is being done.
often it's "why don't u apply to XYZ?", but when funds come w old-school thought that isnt holistically designed to meet the needs of the work, people doing the work or those the work is meant to reach, what other avenues are there? esp for Black & Brown makers, thinkers & doers.
more often than not, intra-communal work needs intra-communal support to keep the work going, to keep the people going, and in turn to keep the designated community(ies) going on our own terms, within our own cultural understandings
a lot of qualitative & quantitative data gathering, esp in the arts, feel rly sentimental of colonial thinking. esp when Black and Brown makers, thinkers & doers are being asked to report (to who?) for said people to decide whether the work is 'necessary' or not.
alongside the public begging for 'engagement' w 'hard to reach communities'. those who are built into the system finesse these communities for said funding. no diversity of thought within the deciding panels to interrogate the (lack of) work. grim to be a part of, grim to witness
anyway, brain splurge. my first tweet is the one that counts lol.
