A while back, I wrote this blog on how fear is what is holding you back from what you want (link at the end of the thread). I got some more insights on the topic in the last few days and here they are.
Fear is the boundary that you set for yourself. It is a safety mechanism. Fear keeps you alert and lets you be cautious. But we need to understand that most of the times, our fears are irrational. It is necessary to logically analyse your fears before falling into the trap.
First step is to understand what exactly you’re fearing. No you’re not scared of the dark, you’re scared of being attacked by something in the dark. Or you’re scared of uncertainty (which again boils down to fear of unexpected failures IMO). So know the root cause of your fear.
Analysing you’re fear is a very brave step, make sure you appreciate yourself for understanding the root cause of your fear.
Your fear is stemmed out of an incident in life. Now that you know the root cause of your fear, try to find the incident in your life that brought about this fear. It can be something very silly too.
Eg most kids are afraid of the dark because their parents told them that if they don’t sleep, the boogeyman will kidnap them 🙄
Know that your fear of something is actually more traumatic than the incident itself. Fear of failing is much worse than actually failing. Fear of falling is much traumatic than falling and scraping your knee. Fear makes you not want to do things, in order to keep you safe!
For many people, anxiety is the constant fear of disappointment. For many people, depression is accepting that whatever they do, their worst fears will come true. I’m no expert, but this is as per my observations.
The only way I know to get out of the constant cycle of fear is by accepting that you are going to be scared; that the fear is almost always illogical. And that what you’re scared of is much less traumatic than this fear. Constant reassurance every time you fall into the cycle.
If you’re struggling with fear, know that it’s okay! We all are. Sometimes what’s put in place to save us can also be what is restricting us from soaring high!
