My heart is so full after my students' presentations of their essays and unessays via zoom today. I will miss them all, so here is a quick recap of what I saw today.
One essay showed the convergence of different waves of feminism in Petra Volpe's "Die göttliche Ordnung" and explained why Switzerland has only been a democracy for not quite 50 years.
An unessay also focused on women's rights and build a diorama that visualized different statistics of women's empowerment in the highest and lowest scoring countries of the Gender Equality Index. It was haunting to see things removed from the room with each information.
An essay brought children's and women's rights together by interpreting the film "Atmen" as a plea for more support for young mothers who may go through postpartum depression.
One essay looked at politics and laws in "gehen, ging, gegangen" and argued for the right to arrival based on both political background and literary analysis.
Another unessay also thought about refugees by creating a language collage of statements from the right and left made about refugees and the solidarity crisis of 2015, making use of font and placement on the page to create a Gesamtkunstwerk.
One unessay was about disability rights: the students painted a beehive on canvas and added quotes of people with disabilities within the beehive to raise awareness and showcase empowering statement.
And another unessay was a collection of personal poems the student wrote based on their own experience. The poems brought together several areas of human rights, personalized them and also made the audience able to relate on a deeper level with the concepts we had discussed.
So ... I will need a minute to digest and appreciate the class, the amazing student work and the vulnerability everyone brought to these projects. Full of gratitude!
