Day 20 of #MuseumsUnlocked is Yorkshire! Back in January I spent the day at @YorkshireMuseum researching some of the tombstones I’m writing about in my thesis - here’s a thread of them all! #RomanBritain
This large stone was set up by veteran G. Aeresius Saenus for himself, his wife, Flavia Augustina, their son, Saenius Augustinus, and daughter. The children were both under the age of two when they died but are depicted as older. (RIB 685) #MuseumsUnlocked
Decimia, daughter of Decimus. The majority of the inscription is missing but the relief depicts a girl with a basket of food and wreath on either side of the central figure. (RIB 692) #MuseumsUnlocked #RomanBritain
This stone commemorates Julia Velva who died aged 50 and is represented by the woman on the couch in the background of the scene. Aurelius Mercurialis, her heir and probably the man at the right, set it up for himself and his family. (RIB 688) #MuseumsUnlocked #RomanBritain
On this stone the inscription names a Aelia Aeliana who is probably represented by the reclining woman who holds in her hand a cup, beside her reclines an unnamed man with scroll. The girl in front is carved in similar high relief. (RIB 682) #MuseumsUnlocked #RomanBritain
Finally, the funerary inscription for Corellia Optata who died aged thirteen and is commemorated with this emotional epitaph from her father and a missing relief which probably depicted her. (RIB 684) #MuseumsUnlocked #RomanBritain
