Anyway here's how the tgcf donghua managed to have an amazing fight scene within 20 seconds
I'm in No way an expert in animation. this is just me. crying about everything i love about this fight scene. this is a messy thread. LET'S GO
There's some key points that make this fight scene so good in my eyes, even when it's just a brief moment in the trailer and those are:
weight, timing, screen work, choreography and colour
// Colour
Let's start with colour!! the scene has a pretty restrictive palette, esp when it comes to the environment and zombies which is basically just black and dark blue. this allows for certain quick second moments (and colours, esp red here) to really shine and stand out!!
Making the sword smears glow in a light blue amps up the aesthetic and makes for a kind of magical feeling which is just SO BEAUTIFUL in my opinion!! ruoye also has white/light blue highlights, making it distinct from what's happening around it, which works really well
// Choreography
This scene doesn't have exceedingly fancy choreography, but it's still really well executed. they turn and move around a lot in a quick speed, keeping it entertaining and keeping the feeling of being surrounded consistent
Plus looking through the single frames made me realize that fu yao fully jumps in the air to stomp the zombie down which is SUPER quick but i love it sm 😭 that's my boy
// Weight, timing, screen work
these go hand in hand so i'll put them together

Probably one of the strongest points of this fight scene is WEIGHT!! to feel a fight you need to feel the impact of attacks, which this scene does MASTERFULLY 💘
Whenever they hit a zombie with their swords, not only do you get a pretty white/light blue flash, they frequently use screen shakes which beautifully conveys the strength of attacks and pulls viewers in. the shakes have ON-POINT timing too!
Also they use gusts of wind to make the impact more visual and it's a minor detail but it's so good
I especially love this moment!!
the impact of his attack comes after fu yao is already standing still, making him quicker than his own attack. the light glow, the wind, the screen shake, it's just such a cool moment
^ Things like these show so well that they're not just random sword fighters, but skilled heavenly officials
Their fighting in general also has extremely good timing!! The contrast of how long it takes to prepare for a slash of their sword to the actual moment of the attack is well done. This moment right here shows that the anticipation takes longer, making for an satisfying attack
The screen work in general is also important!! If you'll look you'll notice that during the fight the screen is constantly moving a tiny bit, constantly reinforcing the movements of the scene
There's only a few moments where the screen stands still, but it's when everything is standing still. An example would be this moment again! The screen starts to move once Nan Feng starts to run again, as if the screen is influenced by their movements and the viewer is live there
Also perspective!! Very minor detail again, but most of the time we're actually looking up at fy and nf, which makes the scene more interesting to look at (also it gives them an air of importance/skill)
This one moment right here is also GENIUS. I've tweeted this before but Ruoye is not a very powerful looking weapon, but due to them 1) zooming in when it's unleashed and 2) choosing that low angle when it pulls the zombie away makes it seem very forceful and quick
The moment of anticipation with the red glow before it fully releases is another good example of their well used timing contrast
Another noteworthy moment is this!! The way the camera goes along with the fight is so fun
Due to all these little moments and the attention to detail (not to mention the love and beautiful art put into every frame), it results in such a satisfying and entertaining fight scene ♡♡
When you think about it, this fight as a concept isn't necessarily that interesting, but they manage to make something so good out of it and I'm extremely excited for what's to come once the animation is released!!
If you made to the end of this thread, thank you for reading!!! I don't ever see people talking about the animation work of the donghua and Haoliners so I wanted to share my love for it 💝💞💕
