A thread on college auditions:
DON’T TELL STUDENTS NOT TO USE ONLINE SOURCES TO FIND PLAYS/ MONOLOGUES FOR AUDITIONS IF YOU HAVE NO OTHER RESOURCES TO GIVE.

MY TOWN HAD
- Shakespeare
- Our Town
- Some vaguely racist/homophobic plays from the 50’s
- That’s about it

no, I didn’t have the money/time to attend several different audition camps while preparing for ACTs and passing my senior classes and applying for scholarships while participating in extra curricular activities to pad the resume.

A lot of kids who show up and bomb or do all the cringe things you don’t want them to do at an audition DONT KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW cuz they couldn’t afford to pay you to tell them ahead of time.

I sure as hell didn’t. All I knew was I love performing, and I love the plays/musicals I had access too. Which was mostly the mainstream stuff.
But everyone said they were too well known. You have to play it smart if you want to get in. You have to surprise them.

I wish someone had told me before college auditions that they want to see my passion, even if it takes the form of singing defying gravity- it would have been more genuine than the obscure Judy garland song I thought they wanted.

And even if I was still rejected singing the songs I loved, at least I could’ve left the room knowing I was true to myself. But I didn’t. And I felt awful.

I wish someone had given me a play version of Netflix so I could find out what options were out there. I wish someone behind the table said “what do you love?” And looked at me like the 17 year old student I was. I wish I believed in myself and my interests.

My mom, my voice teacher and I did our best with out of state college auditions, but we didn’t have the resources and time to get all the info. And I’m still damn proud of myself for doing it.
Thankfully, a good school let me in, they took a chance on passion not polish.

Because it does take courage to walk in a room of people who know more than you, have more experience than you and hold your fate in their hand, and you still try. You still went in and said “you may not like it, but this is what I have. And you will look at me.”

So don’t say “don’t use the internet”. Expand the internet, provide a source that is diverse. Otherwise, you are contributing to an elitist system that tells dreamers living outside of your resources:
You can’t do this if you don’t have the money.
Which is such a loss.

Didn’t really bring that up in the thread, I’ve never considered that- didn’t even know it was an option back in the day (or now frankly)
