Having antibodies doesn't necessarily mean you're immune to the virus. We don't know enough yet to say what kind of immunity antibodies provide or long that immunity lasts. These tests are just a starting place to understand how far the virus has spread in a community.
"Though the results indicate a lower risk of death ... than was previously thought, the number of COVID-related deaths each day continues to mount, highlighting the need for continued vigorous prevention and control efforts," said study co-lead Dr. Paul Simon.
the antibody study shows that between 221k and 441k adults have been infected with the virus in LA County

"The number of total people in the county with a past or current infection is 28 to 55 times higher than the number of reported positive cases," said health director Ferrer.
lots of takeaways from the antibody study, but a big one is that there are probably a lot of people infected with coronavirus who have mild symptoms or no symptoms, so social distancing remains super important. you could have the virus and not know, officials warn.
woah this is a huge difference: the study found that men were more likely than women to be infected with the virus. 6% of men in LA County had antibodies, compared with only 2% of women.
the LA County antibody study found:
--7% of African Americans had antibodies to the virus
--6% of white residents had antibodies
--4.2% of Asians had antibodies
--2.5% of Latinos had antibodies
the LA County antibody study found:
--2.4% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 had antibodies to the coronavirus
--5.6% of people between 35 and 54 had antibodies
--4.3% of between 55 and older had antibodies
Why does the LA County study show that more men were infected than women? Study authors say the findings are preliminary, and it's unclear whether there's a statistically significant difference there.
I'm curious what the antibody levels are in states that delayed stay-at-home orders. LA County officials say we should be proud that our social distancing efforts have kept infections rates to 5%. What is it in those other states? How much higher?
