A lot of people have questioned whether or not it's "appropriate" to be funny during the pandemic.
I completely understand that we're in one of the darkest times in our history and there's a lot that requires compassion and sensitivity right now. People are sick. People are dying. People have lost their jobs. People have lost their healthcare. Everything is uncertain.
Everyone copes with darkness differently.
Some people go to therapy.
Some people medicate.
Some people socialize.
Some people isolate.
Some people laugh.
None of these ways are right or wrong.
Laughter is connective.
It's healing. It's relieving. It's shared vulnerability and raw emotion. It galvanizes humanity, relationships and understanding through darkness, struggle and pain.
Without laughter, I'd be an empty soul. I can find humor in almost anything. More than that, I need to. What people don't always understand about comedians is that we know that most things aren't funny all of the time.
I sob when I lose someone. I'm a goddamn wreck after a break up. I'm still devastated that Inman Oasis is closing and I will be for a while. I often catch myself crying because I miss someone or some place.
Personally, when I allow myself to fully lean into the rest of my emotions, it strengthens my ability to laugh at anything.
Laughter is, in many ways, a culmination of every emotion.
It's fear, it's shock, it's excitement, it's dread, it's sadness, it's anticipation, it's shame, it's pride and it's joy. All in one.
Laughter doesn't have to be one of your methods of coping. There's nothing wrong with that at all, just like there's nothing wrong with people choosing other healthy methods of coping and healing.
You do whatever makes you feel better and I'll support that.
I still hope that someday you'll laugh with me but I'll be understanding if you don't, you bastard.
