So @CBCNews has run a photo of a Canadian flag with a "thin blue line" taped across it. Once again, this is basically a fascist symbol. It is intimately linked to the far-right "Blue Lives Matter" movement that emerged in response to Black Lives Matter.
We realize that these are emotional and high-stress times for journalists. But if you are reporting on police issues you simply have to understand the imagery that is at play. This is not a neutral photo: it is extremely political. Failing to account for this is very negligent.
There are a few journalists in Canada doing great critical work into policing. Far too many continue to view police as an infallible source that is trustworthy and good.
That& #39;s how we end up with media parroting police statements and later editing articles without explanation.

We need to watch very closely for how the media continues to get duped by police in the reporting of this horrific act of terrorism. Police departments across the country will almost certainly exploit the death of an officer to secure greater powers and try to use media to do so.
