As people want to disregard Desi culture and want to deny the CA involved, here's a thread explaining why and what are culturally appropriating our culture;
1) Bindi:
A bindi is also called pottu (a vermillion dot) or Tilak (a vertical marking). This is traditionally important
and have a lot of significance. A black bindi is used by unmarried, young girls and a red one is worn by a married woman. A bindi is not supposed to be used as an aesthetic. It has a huge significance.
2) Maang Tikka:
The center part of your hair is called Maang is of high significance. It's an important feature for married or soon to be married women and Tikka is an ornament you use to adore your Maang. While Hindus place it in the center, Muslims place it to a side.
It's not okay to use it as a fashion ornament by someone who has nothing to do these cultures.
3) Saree:
Saree is considered a symbol of feminity and sensuality by desis. And is completely inappropriate to claim it.
4) Henna:
Many may argue but Henna is one more thing culturally significant to Desi culture and using it as fashion by non desis is something that's supposed to be supposed. It's even used in Middle East and Africa but has their own significance.
Henna, similar to bindi, has been used freely by westerners which completely erases the traditional base and cultural significance it holds.
5) Using Hindu Gods as decorations and tattoos by non followers:
I don't think I have to speak anything on this matter as it is easily understandable. It's okay to use tattoos but using them on places like legs, back... Is highly offensive.
6) Mamgalsutra:
This is a symbol of a marriage. It's of high significance and is of quite importance for a Hindu married woman. Wearing it for fashion by westerners is offensive to the culture behind it.
7) Mudras:
Does this ring any bell? Yeah. These are the same mudras your kpop girlies keeps mocking and using it at their own free will. These mudras are ancient dance mudras and are of huge importance to the Desi culture. Mocking them is highly offensive and if you don't find
anything wrong with the usage of it, y'all need help.
And this is not all that is used freely by westerners that belongs to desis but these are what widely done and ignored.
Wait just saw a video were vlinks defend the use of bindi by claiming it crystal stickers. If its used in the middle of the forehead, baby, it's a bindi. Want to know the reason why the middle of your forehead is of significance here?
We believe the middle of our eyebrows is
our third eye. Meaning that it's our higher consciousness. Now defend it. The Pic shown below are what you call 'crystal stickers' and guess what that is? Surprise surprise! A bindi!
Let me make one more point. Even we desis are NOT allowed to mock or use the mudras freely. We are scolded and made to apologize even if it belongs to us. When we can't do it ourselves, others DEFINITELY should not use it the way they want.
Let me answer this here. If you wear it for an occasion such as our festivals, weddings... It's appreciated. https://twitter.com/Teesmagicalmess/status/1252313969324261376?s=19
And here's one more thing @Genre_is_bts told me and we relate :
We desis, if unmarried, are not allowed to wear a bindi, nath and Maang Tikka together. What explains the actions of your girlies then?
And the ONLY reason why I'm not going off on idols doing it is because I know people are not educated about CA when it comes to our culture which I hope it changes someday.
And I hope people deal with such sensitive topics sensibly and not throw around words just for the sake of fan wars. This is definitely not about fanwars. This is about our culture and I hope everyone will be willing to look at it that way.
I think I haven't completely explained the henna thing. A lot of y'all are confused about it. We don't claim Henna as it comes from nature. It's not our to claim. It's about the way it's used. If you want to use to have western tattoos or fake freckles, it's okay.
It's only bad if you use it make patterns on your palm and forehand like desis do as it has a traditional root
