The benefit of leaving the BBC is that I can tweet this. For every 99.9% of great, innovative and informative programming the BBC airs across its platforms, there’s 0.01% that shows disgraceful editorial judgement. Exhibit A: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000hjnr
This is both irresponsible & triggering for those susceptible to unhealthy eating habits at the best of times, let alone during a time when these are hightened for many due to the lockdown - so irresponsible that @beatED are remaining open tonight in case people feel vulnerable.
BBC editors have previously commissioned me and many others to write/produce really important stories about the rise in unhealthy eating habits and over-stretched charities and this programme, fronted by a doctor (!), quite frankly bulldozes over all the good work done.
I’m shocked this got commissioned, but I’m even more disappointed at the false info. The synopsis says 989 calories would take 2 hours cycling to burn off. What message is this sending? You are not meant to burn all calories! Metabolism doesn’t work that way, eating disorders do.
So @bbcpress please do better. Eating disorder charities have pleaded with you not to show this, you haven’t listened. The presenters are marketing it as “a must see for your health”, it’s the opposite. Please learn from this poor judgment. #Horizon
