Today the @uLethbridge decided to cut both the men’s and women’s hockey programs. The players were given no warning and the coaches were not involved or informed of anything going on. They won’t allow the players to fundraise or fight to keep the program’s alive and dismiss any
suggestions regarding fundraising. The University claims that donors will support the programs for a year or two and then fail to continue contributing. There are now 60 players and staff that have to find a new school and new team if they choose to continue playing hockey.
Our men’s hockey program has players with wives and families whose hockey careers will likely be over. Our former Captain Brock Hirsche developed a scholarship fund to help the program and bring high-end players to Lethbridge, and this now has no players to support.
The University of Lethbridge chose to take the easy way out. I am sick to my stomach.
