THREAD

African Americans & COVID-19

I started this thread earlier & I lost it right before tweeting it, so I had to start over.

I will be adding to this, but for now- here it is...
Last night I saw this article (h/t @RighteousBabe4)

https://twitter.com/RighteousBabe4/status/1252061389046394891?s=20
2/
Beneath this article @RighteousBabe4 also posted something on G6PD. My wheels started turning.

I am not a doctor. If you see something I got wrong, please say so.

3/
Those of you in @gametheorytoday ( @ericgarland's premo account) may remember my tweet about Lecter, fava beans, Chianti, & liver.

What I am explaining is a genetic or drug induced condition which causes a type of anemia. It is also called FAVISM. 5/
@RighteousBabe4 posted an article about G6PD deficiency:

https://twitter.com/RighteousBabe4/status/1252080495665405957?s=20

This causes a type of anemia called hemolytic anemia.
FYI @DemopJ this is associated with autoimmune diseases as well (see 2nd book pic below)

6/
So Favism can be induced by people taking MAOI medication with foods/bev that contain tyramine.

It can also be hereditary. This is the G6PD deficiency. It is most common in Mediterranean, Mid East, & AFRICAN countries. 7/
“An estimated 400 million people worldwide have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. This condition occurs most frequently in certain parts of Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It affects about 1 in 10 African American males in the United States.” 8/
THIS IS A MUTATION that PROTECTS against MALARIA.

THAT MAKES SENSE. RIGHT?

"A reduction in the amount of functional glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase appears to make it more difficult for this parasite to invade red blood cells." 9/
When people with the G6PD deficiency come in contact with certain triggers, the red blood cells stop functioning properly. Their bodies are not able to replace the red blood cells that are dying off at a fast enough pace to keep up with what the body needs. 10/
Many people with this disorder never experience any symptoms. However, the ones that do are usually exposed to something that causes G6PD to surface.

“Triggers”.

Triggers
Anti-malaria drugs?
You don't say.

I'm not a doctor, but this came from the NIH website.

12/
13/

Why Hydroxychloroquine?
Hydroxychloroquine Drug interactions. 14/
Hydroxychloroquine Drug interactions 15/
Hydroxychloroquine Drug interactions 16/
Remember France issuing warnings on NSAID meds with covid19. 17/
18/
Here's screenshot of that study pushed out so quickly.
Maybe these guys should be vetted?
Just a suggestion.
20/
Again, Anti-malarial drugs with G6PD.

Again, not a doctor, but I can read.

21/
22/ More about blood cells
23/ Treatment of G6PD means removing the triggers. And the disease progression is a game changer because it changes the SHAPE OF YOUR BLOOD CELLS.
No, not everyone has the G6PD deficiency,

but the ones that do are of Mediterranean, Middle East, African countries.

(They have more melanin in their skin)

WHY AREN'T WE TALKING ABOUT THIS?

PEOPLE ARE DYING.
