An immigrant mother last month in Prince George's County was sent home from the ER because she didn't have insurance. She came down to DC and went to several medical facilities here and was also turned away. So she went home where she infected her family with #COVID19.
Her husband now been on a ventilator for 17 days. Last week, the family received word that his treatment might be halted, resulting in his death. The family has not heard from the hospital since Friday. Unclear this morning it he is alive or dead.
Before the pandmic, the husband worked 25 years as a delivery man. When the pandemic began he requested permission from his employer to shelter in place. Request was denied. His employer told him that if he didn't want to work, the where would find someone to replace him.
Due to their immigration status, the family received no fed stimulus. A church chipped in $300. Undocumented friends have delivered groceries to their door. Before these deliveries, the wife went a grocery store knowing she was infected to get food for her family.
The way the immigrant community has come together in the DMV during pandemic times is as harrowing as it is incredibly dangerous. The touch points required for this level of informal assistance put everyone at risk. Excluding millions of immigrants from relief dooms many.
Just received word the husband of this ☝🏼 immigrant family in Prince George's County, twenty-five years a delivery man, will be taken off the ventilator to die.
