Honestly, I dont think Dwayne deserved Whitley. She always gave more in their relationship. The only thing that Dwayne had over Byron was seniority. https://twitter.com/sameolduff/status/1251935570634424325">https://twitter.com/sameolduf...
Dwayne was a scrony, goofy freshman with flip up glasses who was in love with Miss Denise Huxtable A woman out of his league. Here he expressed his strong dislike for Whitley,Making fun of how she acted all the way to thinking she only got into Hellman because her family was rich
He didn’t respect Whitley at all. Once Denise leaves there stumbles Whitley who all of a sudden catches Dwaynes eye. And Whitley like Denise is out of Dwaynes league but he still tries to pursue her and he becomes successful but how?
Before Dwayne, Whitley has standards for a man. We would think she’d Persue someone who was out of college, successful in their career etc. but she ends up with Dwayne who convinced her that wanting more was a problem and that she didn’t need those aspects to be in love.
Whitley settles and Dwayne goes from spud to stud in an instant. He was always smart but now that he had Whitley, his aura and personality and swagger overall changed. All that from dating Whitley. People now take him seriously and respect him more.
Then Dwayne fucks up the night before Whitley leaves to head to New York. Whitley over years him on the fireplace saying he’s going to give up on her but when Ron convinced him to stay with her Dwayne tries to play it off but Whitley still hurt, does it for him
Honorable mention for Ron though he played a big part in them staying together. He was always a loyal friend and Dwayne treated him like less because he wasn’t as smart. And he deserved better too but that’s another story
But anyways back to our “love story.” Dwayne realizing he was going to lose her, proposed on an impulse. We now fast forward to where Dwayne and Whitley now engaged are “happy” Everyone exceptthe one person Whitley wants approval from... His mother
Whitley has been trying to get Mrs. Wayne’s approval since they started dating. Yet, Mrs. Wayne always made snarky comments about Whitley to Dwayne and even when Whitley and Dwayne were right in front of her! Did Dwayne defend her? nope all he said was “She’ll grow on you”
AND BEFORE YALL SAY IT I WILL HOLD WHITLEY’S MOTHER ACCOUNTABLEhttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="‼️" title="Double exclamation mark" aria-label="Emoji: Double exclamation mark"> Now Ms. Gilbert was no saint either but at least her and her ex husband still said nice words to Dwayne and didn’t diss him completely. She put effort. And didn’t tolerate no BS from him
Now even though neither side approves let’s not forget that Whitley does have more at steak. Her inheritance, her name, herself as a whole and how does Dwayne respond to this??
Let’s fast forward to the facult meeting Dwayne and Whitley attend the night before their engagement party. Dwayne is socialize with his fellow Collegeus and meets a woman named Lisa who in my opinion looked like a great value version of Janet Jackson but that’s beside the point
And here’s where shot hits the fan. Dwayne had the damn audacity to take this woman out THE NIGHT BEFORE THEIR ENGAGEMENT PARTY??? And told his father “This woman reminds me of the things I maybe missing with Whitley” ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
Whitley feeling betrayed calls off the engagement and When you think about it, Dwayne is just the nice guy who silently waits in the corner and waits for Whitley to become vulnerable. He went from geek to chic to the man Whitley fell in love with. Romantic right?
Dwayne watched Whitley over the years. Paying attention to who she dated, what she liked, until he could morph himself into the idea of a man that Whitley wanted. And did all of that just to build up his own credibility to break up with her and pursue other women
If we think about it Whitley never changed. Sure she mellowed out but she was always boujee, always outspoken, always sure of what she wanted, and Dwayne knew that and still continued to try and change her smh https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤦🏽‍♀️" title="Woman facepalming (medium skin tone)" aria-label="Emoji: Woman facepalming (medium skin tone)">
So after a few months of breaking off their engagements, she meets Byron. An aspiring senator who never tried to change Whitley. It was the relationship Whitley always dreamed of. The money was a bonus this man had everything going for him and more importantly he wanted Whitley
Soon they get engaged and when Dwayne finds out he tried to play it off but he’s furious, talkin bout “she was suppose to fall back in love with me even though I’ve been pursuing other women this whole time and haven’t been successful. She deserves me” BOY BYE
This man then goes to Whitleys again THE NIGHT BEFORE HER WEDDING reminding her about the “good times” they shared. He even says the pressure she put on him was exactly what he needed and wonders why their relationship didn’t work. When he watches her choke on the answer he-
Gets up and is like “welp gotta go” leaving Whitley confused and crying the eve of her wedding. Sounds romantic right? Because only a man who “loved” a woman so much would run to her door step the eve of her wedding and convince her not to marry a man who treated her better than-
He ever could. A man who never asked more of her than to be herself. A man who didn’t need pressure to get his act together but already had it in the beginning. Yeah sounds like some true love https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤦🏽‍♀️" title="Woman facepalming (medium skin tone)" aria-label="Emoji: Woman facepalming (medium skin tone)">
Now the day of her wedding, she decides to move forward with the marriage and has been successfully been walked down the aisle and here comes Dwayne stealin the show. Y’all know the gif...
Here he had something to prove. He was hoping that this PDA of expressing love for Whitley, hoping it would work and it did. So she turns to Byron (the man who did nothing wrong) and apologized and ran to Dwayne.
Dwayne was the man that fought for love right? WRONG AGAIN the man was fighting for the right to call Whitley his. He was fighting for his right to regain power over Whitley. She along with many women who have been treated poorly, chose a man who had “potential” to be great
Even though he wasn’t. And who knows where Whitley would’ve been if she never met Byron? Who knows where she would be if she actually DID marry Byron instead? But regardless in my opinion she had everything with Byron and still settled for mediocrity
And honestly all the women in the show did. Walter was a chauvinist to Jaleesa. Ron cheated on Kim with her best friend and Shaza brainwashed Freddie into thinking she was below him. They all deserved better but that’s a different thread https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😉" title="Winking face" aria-label="Emoji: Winking face">
