Thread... You know in my early days rapping I would say the most exciting and frightening thing was being in a cypher. You first start by watching from the outside the circle as a spectator, you respond and ohh ahh to all the punchlines, then you inch closer and join the circle..
...it gets scary when people glance at you so maybe you beatbox to hide in plain sight. You do this for a couple of weeks until you feel confident enough to drop a couple lines, you kick a couple lines, get a couple reactions and grow your confidence...
... But hip hop is competitive sport, so at any given time you might get attacked in a cypher and that’s when you gotta stand up for yourself and hold your ground lyrically. The cypher forces you to work on your craft and stay ready for anything...
... This why I think it is important to have cyphers or platforms where you can continue to grow as a lyricist. Hip hop is about word economy and using your oratory gifts to tell your story effectively...
