A thread on Hazel Coppice. This pic is of a wood in early spring after all the hazel has been coppiced (cut leaving low stumps) A few birch and oak trees have been left to grow on. 1/
This is a fine example of a stool (mass of cut stumps) before cutting in the Autumn after the growing cycle. Billhooks were traditionally used for felling but the chainsaw is more efficient and perhaps the only concession to modernity.

Continuous Weave fences are built on site as a more decorative garden feature and are useful on undulating ground.
This is a hurdle made using mostly split rods but some smaller round rods are twisted to hold it together. Split wood lasts longer and produces a tighter weave. Similar hurdles were found near Glastonbury preserved in a peat bog from the Neolithic era. 4/
