Going Vegan/Being Vegan: A Dummies Guide

1. Change Your Mindset

- Meat isn't essential to good health
- Meat isn't the only way to get protein
- Dairy isn't the only source of calcium
- The vegan diet is not boring, it's actually incredibly innovative, healthy, & delicious.
2. Vegan is Healthy (Don't Worry)

- A well-planned and varied diet is one of the healthiest diets on the planet.
- It's supported by tens of thousands of medical professionals worldwide and by the dietic associations of both the UK and the USA.
3. Do I Need to Go Vegan Overnight?

- No, not unless you can or really want to.
- You can eliminate animal foods gradually (least eaten to most eaten.)
- Ignore vegans who say you must go vegan immediately because they did. Everyone is different.
4. Will I Lose Weight?

- It depends on your existing diet. If you have a poor diet now and you move to a healthy vegan diet, then yes you will lose weight.
- It also depends on your vegan diet, if all you eat is junk food then no you probably won't lose weight.
5. Vegan Vs. Wholefoods Plant-Based

- A vegan only eats plant foods. No animal ingredients. They also avoid animal clothing, animal-tested products, and animal entertainment.
- Wholefoods plant-based is a health diet based on eating low-processed and organic foods
6. Take a Vegan Challenge

- One of the best ways to try veganism is to challenge yourself. Look up Challenge 22 or @veganuary
10. Eat Lots

- At the start, focus on eating enough food. Don't be one of those people that complains they feel tired and weak simply because they exchanged steak for lettuce. Still eat your RDA of calories.
11. Don't Lose Sleep Over Nutrients

- At the start, just focus on eating a varied and balanced diet. Fruits, veg, legumes, starchy foods, beans, nuts, and seeds.
12. Eat Lots of Snacks

- As a vegan, you need to eat more than someone on a typical omni diet. Now you have lost calorie-dense foods like meat and dairy, you need to make up those calories.
- Snack on nut butters, granola bars, hummus, guac, trail mix, and dried fruit.
13. Find Support

- Vegan Twitter
- Vegan Facebook: Forks Over Knives, Vegans United, Plant-based recipes and transitioning support, What Broke Vegans Eat (great if you're on a budget!)

14. Eat Junk Food

- Not every day and certainly not as a staple. But do enjoy some of the new vegan foods available from time to time.
15. Don't Let Others Put You Down

- Your decision is going to irritate some of the people in your life. Don't let it get you down. You do you and shrug off any criticism.
16. Get to Know Your Why

- Why are you going vegan? You're going to get that question a lot. Make sure you have an answer, it will save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run.
17. Know The Facts

- People are going to try gaslight you into thinking you're an idiot and that all the information surrounding veganism is not real.
- Go learn the facts about animal ag, fur, leather, zoo's your health and the environment. It's all out there.
18. Don't Argue with People

- Ask people to respect your decision. You don't have to fight with your family or friends at every meal. It's your choice, stick by it.
- Don't get baited by people into silly arguments.
- Live by example, people will soon get it.
19. Be a Positive Influence

- You don't need to shout bloody murder at people to get them interested in veganism.
- Encourage people to try vegan foods with you. Show them how easy it is.
- Cook vegan for family or friends.
20. Advocate

- Once you feel comfortable in your veganism, use your knowledge to spread the message. Join your local AV group.
- Speak to people about the issues in a calm and informative manner.
