DEVS 1 was very Alex Garland, extremely enticing. I'm already slightly spoiled on a bit of the premise but there's clearly a bit more to come. Biggest tightrope is the relationships - they need to feel real as we go further.
DEVS 2 burned right through a whole premise. A surprisingly political bent that I didn't feel was properly explored - it still could do, but after that ending I don't know. I really hope Offerman's character has more to him, his motivation as it stands is a little simplistic.
Several chilling sequences. My favourite was the messaging app, perfect use of graphics. The DEVS HQ continues to be a Garland photography utopia. Also a cute girl works there, so 10/10 TV show.
DEVS 3 goes a long way to showing us that Lily is a capable protagonist. The most interesting character so far, though, is Kenton the security guard. Man is "powerful" (in the show's context) but clearly far from untouchable. Would like more Lyndon and Stewart pls
Also I have learned that the cute girl who works in DEVS is actually a cute boy being played by a cute girl. Big androgynous shrug - cute's cute!
DEVS 4 focuses on Lyndon a lot so it's the best episode so far. The Lily psychology stuff is the closest thing to padding the show has so far, so I'm glad it comes crashing down at the end. The direction of that sequence in the car is very Garland.
Jamie cleaning his apartment was fun. With the big upending of the board here at the end I'm now hoping the two strands of the story collide (though not for poor SPOILER, who I think has seen their last episode). Lily & Lyndon team up pls
DEVS 5 has obviously only just begun, but the apartment tracking shots are the standout scene so far. So illustrative of these two relationships and their separations.
I'm going to throw in, right here, that DEVS is available on BBC iPlayer, is eight episodes long, and (so far) is a true standout of the year. If you liked Ex Machina or Annihilation, or any techy thriller, you're really going to like it.
The flashback structure to this episode is nothing new but it is so uniquely effective at what it needs to do - take the foot off the gas and let these ideas breathe.
And I'm very thankful that it advances the plot one particular way at the very end, saving us from a Cuckoos Nest episode and cementing Jamie as a hero. And the Katie...smiles. Gorgeous.
DEVS 6 lays out its mission statement, but we mostly got it from the past five episodes. If you needed this exposition dump, then you probably didn't stick with this show this long. But the structure of the two conversations works, with Katie the standout of course.
X and Y sleeping together feels abrupt and unnecessary right now, but we'll see if it takes it anywhere.
The water is definitely important. I am very confident in that right now. How? Fuck knows.
"Fairly deeply in like" is actually quite sweet. I wish there had been anything leading up to it, but these two have really good chemistry. Allow me now to praise Nick Offerman, who is the star of this fucking show and hasn't even had a mention in this thread.
