The air pollution in the Los Angeles area is not a new problem, as people have been suffering from dirty air there for over 80 years

LA's air pollution took a dramatic turn for the worse at the start of America's industrialization at the start of WWII, with a local air quality committee finding industrial exhaust to be the main culprit as the air was getting so bad, people started calling it a gas attack
Recognizing it as a problem, in 1947 the California State Legislature created the Unified Air Pollution Agency which later found out that the terrible air condition was not caused by industries as originally thought but rather cars

Recognizing this as a problem, not just in LA but across the states, legislatures fought for cleaner air by enforcing tailpipe emission standards and catalytic converters in 1966 and mid-1970s to dramatically improve air quality
The fight against pollution was never just the lack of certain technologies but also industries that benefitted from lax air standards. Every single legislative action was battled out with fierce lobbies such as oil and auto trying their hardest to stop them from being passed
This raises the question, why is LA's air so bad, if it has been a recognized problem with such fierce fighting for so long. One reason is quantity, as cars became cleaner, they also grew in number as LA had 1.5 million people in 1950 while having 6,433,000 cars in 2010
