Miniscule Lifespan of Electronics and Improper Recycling of E-Waste

As technology becomes more integrated into our everyday lives, e-waste is slowly becoming a larger problem for our societies.
Smartphones, AirPods, gaming systems, computers and more are beginning to have shorter lifespans as a result of the rapid advancement of technology.
Due to shorter lifespans, more and more technology is ending up as e-waste which can be harmful to groundwater and the atmosphere if not treated correctly.
In 2017 the EPA reports that only about 12% of total e-waste is recycled. Which results in millions of dollars of gold and electronic parts put into landfills each year.
The e-waste that ends up in landfills has hazardous effects on groundwater and both land and sea ecosystems if left to sit. And more commonly, the waste is incinerated on the site of the landfill, releasing toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse gas effect.
