I dreamt last night of the idea to watch all of my movies (physical copies only) and alphabetical order to see how fair I could get before isolation ends. First to 28 days later- numbers are first in my system. Maybe not ideal to start with a pandemic movie?
Next up 500 Days of Summer. Some prime previews on this one.
Movie #3 is A Lot Like Love, romantic vehicle for Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet- my recall is that it exceeds expectations.
I have to say- A lot like love held up, recommend- also The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is in it!
Movie four: About Time
About Time is great. If you haven’t seen it check it out on Netflix. Same director as Love Actually- but this is so much better- it has a plot, and no truly awful characters/choices.
Last movie of the day # 5: All About Steve, from what I recall a truly bad movie with Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper. It’s been in several previews!
As you may be able to tell my movie collection is largely based on 2004-2012 movie releases.
Movie 6- Anchorman, inexplicably the previews were all for action movies.
30 mins in I’ve only laughed once- Diversity is a civil war ship. And in n crushed to discover I alphabetized it before Amazing Grace and Amelie.
100% serious on the DVD for Amazing Grace there is a preview for Amazing Grace. It’s like inception. Movie 7 - Amazing Grace
Pretty sure baby Benedict Cumberbatch is in this one!
Going to try to not tweet the whole movie- but even the men rock wigs in Amazing Grace.
Movie 8- Amelie, my multi tasking probably won’t jive well with reading subtitles, we’ll see how much I enjoy just listening.
It didn’t default to subtitling, so now I’m truly just listening!
Movie 9- Atonement, truly don’t believe I’ve ever seen it. Another Benedict Cumberbatch appearance.
Romola Garai also is in both Amazing Grace and Atonement.
Movie 10- August Rush, I vaguely recall it. Think Robin Williams plays a homeless busker?
Trying to remember how this kid ends up an orphan. It’s the classic mom is hit by a car- they tell her the baby is dead when he isn’t.
Movie 11- Beautiful Creatures a truly awful movie of what I recall being a decent YA novel? Think twilight with witches instead of vampires.
Movie 12: Beauty and the Beast (animated) from the Blu-ray release
Movie 13- Before Sunrise, it’s the only before movie trilogy I own a physical copy of. And no doubt I’ll remember how I love Ethan Hawke.
This morning after coaxing my Blu-ray player to recognize the disc we are watching movie 14: Begin Again
Movie 15: Beginners, side note I’m questioning my alphabetical skills - should this have been before begin again?
Movie 16: The Book Thief.
Movie 17: Bridesmaids
Movie 18: Bride and Prejudice
Ok this movie is insane, but it’s like watchable- which is a relief.
Movie 19: Bridget Jones Diary- still in that Jane Austen pride and prejudice theme
Movie 20: Bridget Jones- the edge of reason
Movie 21: Can’t Hardly Wait
Also too be clear, I watched this yesterday- not during work today 🤷🏻‍♀️
Movie 22: Catch and Release; underrated gem with Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant.
Movie 23: Chasing Amy- haven’t seen in 15 years?
Movie 24: Chicago
Movie 25: Cinderella (live action)
Movie 26: Clueless (another Austen adaptation)
Cher=Emma, Josh=Mr. Knightly, Miss Giest= Poor Miss Taylor, Ty= Harriet, Travis= Robert Martin, Elton= Mr. Elton, Mr. Hall= Mr. Weston, Christian= Frank Churchill
I could maybe make the argument that Dion is Emma’s sister/Murray her brother in law (the other Mr. Knightly) or perhaps a little Miss Taylor/Mrs Weston- which I think is more of a stretch. No Jane or obvious Bates.
If you want a really solid Emma adaptation the Romola Garai / Johnny Lee Miller is solid but 4 hours because it was made for tv, haven’t seen the newest Emma. For 90’s versions go with Kate Beckensale over Gwenyth Paltrow.
Movie 27: Confessions of a Shopaholic, this is actually a pretty charming movie I totally forgot about. Still, as always, the books are better- and set in England vs New York. Would watch again.
Movie 28: Constantine, not great, but Tilda Swinton wows, slightly older than baby Shia LaBeouf, and for no reason I can tell Gavin Rossdale.
Movie 29: Crazy, Stupid, Love. Steve Carrel really pulls off middle age dad in the beginning.
Movie 30: Creed- hello Michael B Jordan. On to D’s tomorrow.
Movie 31: Dances with Wolves, is you have 4 hours to spare it’s lovely view of the beauty of South Dakota. Also Kevin Costner manages to include a shot of his bare butt.
Movie 32: The Dark Knight, unknown why I own this, not Batman Begins or Dark Knight Rises
Movie 33: Death at a Funeral, U.K. version - everything is whispered had to really crank the volume to n hear it over the open windows
Movie 34: Disturbia, another almost baby Shia feature
Movie 35: Divergent- still don’t understand what happened.
Movie 36: Drop Dead Gorgeous- an all time fav. Kirsten Dunst kills it
Movie 37: Eastern Promises, it’s so violent and hard to watch- lots of forced sex work of young girls. I’m mostly just sewing masks with my back turned.
Movie 38: Edge of Tomorrow: live. die. repeat. Extremely underrated Emily Blunt action movie- also with Tom Cruise who is ok, not my jam. I’m here for Emily.
Also one quick note about the Eastern Promises dvd- it was old enough to have an ad for HD DVD, was this a precursor to Blu-ray?
Back to Edge of Tomorrow. The plot is roughly- groundhog’s day except the earth has been invaded by aliens.
Movie 39: Elf
Movie 40: Elizabethtown, a movie that I have a soft spot for, but have never known of anyone else who enjoys. Lots of famous people: Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Paula Deen, Judy Greer, Jessica Biel
For real though, it’s pretty dark at the beginning. There is an extended preparing to off myself scene in the first 20 min. Gets less dark.
Movie 41: Emma- 90’s Gwyneth version, which honestly isn’t my favorite. No clue as to why I own this on DVD, have a feeling the Kate Beckensale version was not as available- also was made for TV would be in my tv collection
Here is the problem with an Emma feature length film. The character Emma isn’t always that likable, she makes lots of mistakes. In two hours you don’t have time to like her again after her faults. Again check out the Romala Garai version (4 eps) lots of depth.
Movie 42: Enchanted
Movie 43: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Movie 44: Evita, had to delete previous tweet that said Elvira lol. I love Evita, unabashedly. Madonna and Antonio Banderas kill it.
Movie 45: The Family Stone, reminds me that I love Luke Wilson, stellar cast bonkers plot.
Movie 46: Fast & Furious, somehow I own movie 4 and no others.
I think it’s possible I own 5 digitally if 5 is the one they are in Brazil.
I truly have no idea what just happened in this movie. Never need to see it again.
Movie 47: The Fault in Our Stars. This book made me ugly cry- but now it’s like 🤷🏻‍♀️. We’ll get there but Me, Earl, and the dying girl is a superior version of kid with cancer movie.
Movie 48: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Didn’t enjoy, Jennifer Grey was a standout. As was Sloane’s hair.
Movie 49: Field of Dreams- every respectable Iowan should own a copy. Young Kevin Costner as always is dreamy. Truly bonkers concept.
From all over, they’ll just decide to take a vacation see, and they’ll come to Iowa City and think it’s really boring. Perfect quote from Field of Dreams
The “is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa” Happens twice in the movie: once with Shoeless Joe, and at the end with Ray’s dad.
Also the music bops! I would have loved to play this score in full orchestra.
Movie 50: Fifty Shades of Grey, truly embarrassed to b own it. Although I believe the movie is better than the book.
Movie 51: the Fighter. Don’t recall buying it or seeing it. Maybe because Christian Bale won his Oscar for this??? I don’t know if that’s true
This movie got me thinking, who’s more Boston to you: Walberg’s or Affleck’s?
Wahlberg or Affleck- ugh spelling
Movie 52: Finding Neverland
Movie 53: First Knight, it’s one of those special movies where they let the American lead (Richard Gere) keep his American accent, even though it’s set in England/Camelot and everyone else has an appropriate accent. Also see Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Movie 54: For the Love of the Game. Kevin Costner loves baseball y’all. I don’t recall the plot- I do know Kevin Costner is a major league pitcher, and at some point in his woodshed he cuts his hand. Also maybe it’s a romance? With more than just his love of the game.
It’s all about him trying to pitch a perfect game- on the day his girlfriend leaves him and his club wants it to be his last. I love Kevin Costner- no reason why just do. So far no shots of his nude butt- although there were his tighty whities earlier.
Movie 55: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, still laughed abt the Dracula musical.
Movie 56: Frozen, two very different K. Bell performances in a row.
Olaf is the best part of this movie, he has all of the best jokes.
Movie 56: Garden State, Zach Braff is the guy version of a manic pixie dream girl.
One thing this experiment has taught me is that you can change and grow. Garden State was very me in college- as in I wanted to be what Garden State was, now I’m like this is eh with a good abet melodramatic soundtrack.
Also I know you can remove trash from your vocabulary- in the 90’s every kid I knew says the R word, (including me) now I’m shocked if I hear it- it’s riddled all over Clueless, an otherwise funny movie, that I now would never allow my teenage and preteen nieces/nephews to watch
Also see Drop Dead Gorgeous for excessive use of the R word, and often it was used to speak about the mentality challenged character. No clue if this is better or worse. It’s JARRING to hear it in 2020.
Movie 57: The Grand Budapest Hotel, confusing to me why I own this one and not other Wes Anderson films.
Movie 58: The Great Gatsby (2013) not watching, I’m ready for a nap!
The next movie is Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’m not sure I can watch the scene where Elizabeth is violated by her social worker. Might just take a break tonight.... I have like six awful episodes of Vanderpump Rules to catch up on.
Movie 59: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- David Finches version, I’m “watching” by muting all of the sexual violence scenes, at least until Lizbeth can meet Blumkvist.
What I do enjoy about this movie is almost everything else. Especially Daniel Craig wearing his reading glasses around his chin walking down the street.
Movie 60: The Hangover.
Buckle up y’all we’ve made to a point where we’ll be watching some complete series: first up?
Movie 61: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
The first one is just on dvd not Blu-Ray, it doesn’t even have a widescreen option 🤷🏻‍♀️
Movie 62: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Everyone looks much older I barely recalled the plot of the first one, this one is coming back to me.
Do you think kids at Hogwarts that were not Ron or Hermione - straight up hated H.P.? Like he is always breaking rules, bringing death to class, and he is famous.
Movie 63: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Movie 64: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- welcome to the party baby Robert Pattinson and David Tennent
Movie 3 all of the boys had crazy sticking up hair, movie 4 it’s all stores long. Tragic times in the HP universe
Moaning Myrtle is a pervert. There I said it.
After an afternoon break to enjoy this weather, I’m back at it.
Movie 65: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Initial thoughts: all of the boys found a barber!
Movie 66: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Oddly this is the first Blu-Ray format of this series that didn’t immediately start the movie- previews for Wizard of Oz
It was the only preview. Wild. When not making my way through my dvd collection I’ve been obsessively watching and rewatching A Discovery of Witches. Waitress in half-blood = Juliette in discovery
This makes me so old but, could movie sound by designed you could watch the whole thing at one volume? I’m constantly cranking it up to hear dialogue only to have blown out ear drums during action sequences. I just want a volume design that allows me not to adjust and hear.
Movie 67: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1
Okay this movie still has it. I’m legit considering staying up to roll right into part 2. I’ve been in and out with the rest of this series, but 7.1 you bop. Also the snake jump still gets me. Remember being in the theatre for this one with @stnelson and my friend Giao jumping
Movie 68: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2, sleep won watched it after church. Good but I think part 1 is better
Movie 69: Heathers
Movie 70: Hellboy- Guillermo del Toro 2004 version
I truly love this movie, I have the special collection 3 disc set, del Toro has such a strong vision!
Movie 71: Hellboy II: The Golden Army, honesty is great. Visuals amazing- very little CG- lots of practical effects
Movie 72: Hidden Figures, this is a great movie. I can’t imagine the impact it would have had on me as a young girl. It’s solid. Makes you happy and mad, and then happy again.
Made me cry. Although that’s a low bar these days!
Movie 73: How to Deal- a Sarah Dessen book adaptation with Mandy Moore
I’ll just say my hair is at a length where I could pull off this Mandy Moore look I think. At one point she had double part braids for her fringe. Something I’ll be exploring this weekend no doubt.
Movie 74: The Hundred Foot Journey. Luckily I’ve already had dinner- this movie has maximum amounts of food porn.
Movie 75: The Hunger Games. Definitely cried when Rue died.
Movie 76: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Would have loved these two movies to be 74 & 75 to align with the games 🤷🏻‍♀️ but this is pretty close.
In a bummer move, I don’t have the last two Hunger Games movies. So I’m on to another.
Movie 77: Inception
Nolan and Fitcher movies are great examples of how the score can really elevate the movie experience. Inception has a great score.
Next up all four of the Indiana Jones movies. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever seen Raiders off the Lost Arc- bought this as a bundle.
Movie 78: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc. Looking forward to young Harrison Ford
Movie 79: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
I recall two things about this movie: Monkey Brains and that Short Round inexplicably was a taxi driver at age 9?
Also all of the music in Indiana Jones sounds a lot like Star Wars.
Temple of Doom is actually a prequel to Raiders, which leads me to: should I have watched in order of release (which I did) our sequential order of events? Luckily when we get to stars wars I don’t recognize 1-3 exist, so I don’t own them.
In truly cannot handle the amount of typos in this thread. But we move on because this isn’t important.
Movie 80: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
I always loved this movie- I think it was my introduction to Indy (the earlier ones came out before I was born) love Sean Connery, love River Phoenix, love that German lady who tricks Indy. Love love love the library scene with the book stamp and the floor.
