something about white passing wasians referring to themselves as “jungle Asians” does not sit right w me.
I don’t even like the term regardless (plus it’s a stolen Ali Wong joke??) but to refer to yourself as something you won’t actually be called is

“why does it matter that she’s white-passing”: We should NEVER demean ourselves like that regardless of skin color but we know damn well being LIGHTSKINNED in SEA carries privileges - like NOT being referred to as a jungle Asian or similar terms for not being visibly brown.
No one is “denying” her of her race. But understand within your race/ethnicity there’s another systems at play that allow some to be more privileged than others.

Out of hundreds of comments there were only a handful who weren’t okay with being jungle Asian. This is v sad and much to think about :(
this is a very good thread explaining all my thoughts better than I ever could: https://twitter.com/jessi_ex/status/1252054661907038209?s=21">https://twitter.com/jessi_ex/... https://twitter.com/jessi_ex/status/1252054661907038209">https://twitter.com/jessi_ex/...
Also no being half white and white passing is not nearly the same experience as Filipinos who are half black, don’t even try it.
If you’re white passing and wanna use this thread to talk about your identity crisis do NOT. Do not come into brown and darker skinned spaces when you benefit from colorism and other privileges. Talk about it w other white passing peers bc that is not that this thread was for.
Brown and visibly Asian people face colorism, racism, and xenophobia. Black Asians face all that IN ADDITION to anti blackness in the Asian community. Our indigenous Filipinos are being murdered and their land is stolen. White passing is not even remotely similar to any of these.
Non filipinos hopping in and trying to say “let her call herself a jungle Asian” nope this isn’t for you either and go be America’s favorite ch*nk somewhere else.
