Good morning guys, it’s time to talk about homeschooling. I was homeschooled through all the way through my 12 years of school and have observed the way many other families homeschool. I’m not an “expert” of any sort, I just have my experience and observations to go off of.
Okay, let’s start with the suggested cons I have heard over the years:
- It’s isolating for kids, especially an only child
- Homeschooled kids don’t learn how to work with others
- They are socially awkward
- It’s possible they aren’t getting a proper education
...
- How can parents properly teach their children if they’re not teachers
- It’s easier to cover up abusive parenting
- Kids won’t know how to learn in a classroom setting
- They could be taught unpopular or bad worldveiws and they don’t have the school to help “correct” them
Look, homeschooling could be isolating but especially these days, with ability to go to co-ops and have communities of homeschoolers it’s really often not. In fact homeschooled kids usually have more time to play with their friends because they usually not only finish school
earlier in the day, but don’t then have extra homework. Not to mention a good chunk of homeschool families are Christian so they have a church community. I’ve gotta say, some of the most socially awkward people I have met went to “real” schools. I have seen some extremely
anti-social homeschooled kids but those were usually people who lived in more isolated places, and were in the minority.
I think one legitimate issue, but something that is getting better, is that homeschooled kids often aren’t able to play school sports. Though this I suspect is
improving as homeschooling becomes more popular. Other than that I’m not sure where the idea that kids who were homeschooled are bad at working with others in groups or on a team considering many homeschooled families have lots of kids. I suppose if you were to homeschool an only
child you could run into this issue, but again, there are co-ops the child could be a part of that make this really not an issue at all.
Okay, so how about a proper education? We all know the stereotypes of homeschooled being great at spelling and being really smart. They exist
for a reason. That’s not to say there isn’t potential for people to be lacking, but parents generally want their kids to be able to succeed in life. They care more about their kid being successful than the government does. I would say the one thing with homeschooling is that
because it is more customisable it’s possible a kid is less knowledgeable about certain things, but those are usually not essential to life. Plus I’ve seen plenty of public schooled kids who grew up to be ignorant adults.
How much you learn from your schooling often comes down to
motivation and desire to learn. I have observed this a lot more in people who were homeschooled. They aren’t (always) studying for the grade, but because they recognise the value of learning and desire the knowledge that comes with education. Part of this is because it can be
customised to fit each individual child’s needs. A teacher in a large classroom can’t adjust teaching to the different ways each kid learns best, but homeschool allows for that. Where are the areas a kid struggles? Let’s change up the way we do this and look up resources to see
what’s best to help them here. Where are the area a kid excels? How do we take advantage of that and help them meet their potential in that area? That has been my experience with homeschool education. Homeschooled kids are known for being talented in creative things? Why is that?
because they have to time and encouragement to hone those skills. They aren’t constrained by the structure of schools but if their parents desire they can have a more structured education. Some homeschool families are very strict and structured. It all depends.
How can parents
properly teach their kids? Well they know enough to help them with the basics but they also have teachers manuals to go off of and other resources. Once their kids get into highschool age or if they’re doing computer/online classes they don’t really need a lot of instruction from
the parents. They can read what to do and then do it. Sure this takes more motivation and discipline on the child’s part, but when you grow up used to that structure, that sort of comes with it.
I don’t know much about how many homeschool parents were abusive, but I would say
that it’s a very small percentage. But I don’t know a lot regarding that.
When it comes to kids not knowing how to learn in a classroom setting, I think they can adjust fairly well if they desire that sort of education, but that’s really not essential. Classrooms are not like
“real life” and if the kid wants to go to college they can adjust. If not it’s probably because they naturally struggle in that setting, like I do.
And what about kids being taught crazy ideas? I mean that’s possible, but come on, public schools have their own agendas with
teaching and in the end, kids do not belong to the government, they aren’t just pieces in a society, they are individuals and their parents discretion is more important than the government’s will for how this child think. That’s a very dangerous path I’d we don’t allow parents to
teach their kids their values. Yes that means we risk some kids getting the bad ones taught to them, but for them most part kids aren’t being harmed by being brought up with their parents’ worldview. It’s GOOD to have diversity of thought, not complete uniformity. As kids grow
and mature they can think and reason, like any other kid, about whether what they were taught is right or not. They are individuals, not cogs in a machine meant to do the will of the society in which they live.
I was going to go more into the pros of homeschooling be this thread is so long.
