Nikolai explains that to understand Tedros it first helps to understand some things about the history and ethnography of highland East Africa.

Ethiopia was the only major African nation uncolonised by Europeans and the Ethiopian king Haile Selassie, is worshiped by Rastafarians.
Haile was an Emperor who ruled over different ethnic groups. After his re-installation at the end of WWII, he was given the neighbouring country of Eritrea, which included many Tigrinya people and eight other ethnic groups. One of these border-dwelling people were the Tigray.
Haile Selassie was Amharic. Alongside the Tigrinya and the Tigray the 3 groups are very similar. They are mostly Orthodox Christians, with a minority of Muslims. Their traditional clothes are nearly identical. They braid their hair in similar styles.

None of them get along.
When the beloved Haile Selassie gained control of Eritrea, instead of allowing local governance as demanded by the UN-mandated federal system, he instead arrested everyone involved and began treating the territory as just another conquered land.
The Eritrean capital Asmara had been the industrial centre of East Africa with most of its exports heading to Ethiopia. Haile forcibly exported all of Asmara’s productive machinery to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Asmara was gutted.
Haile fiercely treated any who opposed his rule - whether in Eritrea or elsewhere. He pioneered the technique of failing to alleviate famines if they occurred among rival ethnic groups, including amongst the Tigray.
Haile was eventually deposed by Communists, the Derg, who ruled Ethiopia from 1974 to 1987. Like Communists everywhere, they were even worse, bringing even greater suffering and slaughter to Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The Amharic Derg were the mob in control when the 1983-1986 famine occurred, again impacting the Tigray. Like their predecessor, the Derg were none too keen to stop the famine’s effects on their ethnic rivals.
Tedros was born in Asmara in 1965 during Haile’s rule and is Tigray. The Tigray mostly live outside Asmara, but worked there as servants/labourers for the better-educated Tigrinya. They were looked down upon by the Tigrinya, but not hated. The Amharic were their common enemy.
Tedros got his BSc (Biology) from the University of Asmara, then joined the Derg as a junior public health specialist.

He has a Masters in Immunology of Infectious Diseases & a PhD in Community Health.

He’s not a medical doctor. All other candidates for Head of the WHO were.
We’ll return to Tedros. In the meantime, in the war against the Derg there were 2 rival Communist forces who cooperated with each other: the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The Derg lost most of their support when the USSR collapsed.
When the Derg were exposed, the EPLF grabbed the initiative and won back control of the whole of Eritrea. Strangely, unexpectedly, the TPLF were also wildly successful. Not only did they liberate the Tigray region from the Ethiopian govt – they won control of the entire country.
Their EPLF backers, not expecting to be popular in Ethiopia, retreated back to Eritrea and the TPLF formed the new Ethiopian govt.

Now Tedros returns. With his Tigray background he was able to transition from Derg lackey to the TPLF Minister for Health, then Foreign Minister.
If you read accounts of his achievements at this time, you’ll hear 2 very different stories depending on your source.

Here is the positive story:

During his time as Health Minister deaths from malaria decreased by 50%, new AIDS infections by 90%, and infant mortality by 30%.
The above is from his own campaign to be leader of the WHO. The figures are from official (TPLF) statistics.

And then there’s the negative.

The Tigray, long abused, neglected and starved by Amharic rulers, thought it was about time they got a piece of the pie. A big piece.
They acted like Haile Selassie in reverse, using all national and donated resources to, as they saw it, develop their own people and thereby redress historic wrongs. Other ethnic groups (not just the Amhara) were unhappy about this, but any resistance was brutally crushed.
Surely declaring an outbreak and notifying the WHO could have helped to get funds and equipment to battle the disease?

But the outbreaks occurred in areas occupied by the Amharic and other ethnic groups, so the Tigray were fine for some of them to die off from cholera.
4. An audit by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria found substandard construction of health facilities and weak accounting systems. They asked for a $7 million refund.

Tedros has helped cover up the crimes of the Marxist TPLF including killing civilians, political repression, and the imprisonment, torture and rape of dissidents and opposition leaders. Prominent Ethiopians themselves protested his appointment to the WHO.
After leading this charmed and privileged life, there was finally a stroke of bad luck for poor Dr. Tedros. The TPLF wanted him to get the top job at the WHO in order to strengthen its influence within UN circles, and campaigned on his behalf...
... unfortunately, when he was appointed, the TPLF lost power and a new PM from the Oromo people was elected. Hence, the present Ethiopian govt is not too keen on its local hero. The biggest campaign for his removal comes from rivals and victims of the TPLF in Ethiopia itself.
There’s a lot of info out there on Dr. Tedros: his relationship with Robert Mugabe, his connection with the Gates Foundation, Soros-owned orgs and the Clintons... far too much to write about here. I urge you all to look into this man who claims to stand for the world’s health.
