People often ask me what is Occupational therapy?
Covid - 19 has taken away your occupations, your roles & your social identity.
An occupation is not your job but everything you do from washing and dressing, going shopping, meeting friends, going for a coffee, going to the gym,
caring for family members etc. This virus has changed all that and you are now experiencing occupational deprivation just as if you had a long term illness or disability. Your roles as a parent, friend, grandchild, grandparent have all changed suddenly.
An OT helps people engage in meaningful occupations and gain a sense of self & maintain, change or regain roles.
What you are all doing at the moment is meaningful occupation, taking care of yourselves, engaging in hobbies, interests, exploring new interests,
volunteering to help people shielding, home schooling, working creatively & adapting to new roles & occupations.
All of what you are doing is Occupational Therapy.
This is what I do everyday and that is why I am proud to be an Occupational Therapist.
