(Thread): A great article but the simple statement of 'buy seeds' fails to realise that all food comes from seed and seed needs to be first grown too. Seed stock around the world has been depleted due to the phenomenal demand over the last month https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/gangster-gardening-living-off-the-land-5071034-Apr2020/
as people started to consider the importance of growing their own food. This stock will need several years to bulk back up. People need to consider growing their own seed to truly have control over their food security. Over 95% of the food seed in Ireland is imported
and mass produced to make available cheaply, thereby undervaluing the farmer that grew the seed. Next time you buy seed from a supermarket, garden centre, or growing network, ask from where the Seed was grown. Quite likely they won't know
Cheap seed will be from countries with vastly different growing conditions to your own & likely F1 hybrid seed which prevents the seeds being saved, thereby perpetuating the need for you to keep buying your seed year on year. This prevents true security in our food accessibility.
This is why more needs to be done to support locally grown food seed and a much greater focus to acknowledge Seed in the food cycle. Without Seed there isn't food to grow. @foodsecurity_IE @farmersjournal @thejournal_ie @oliver_moore @SorchaPollak @jenoconnell
