It's hard being a Sonic fan who grew up with the series in the 2000's. It's like we grew up in an era of Sonic that everyone disregards the merits of, including the Sonic Team.
Can you really blame 06 fans for being defensive about the game when they're constantly being told their childhood game is trash, a mistake, the thing that ruined Sonic?
Can you blame the people who grew up with the more serious stories for being upset when Sonic Team decides to make the stories into a complete joke and people commend them for it?
The fans who grew up in this time get so much shit for the games they enjoy. They're told that everything that they liked about the series is bad and wrong from both Classic and Modern fans.
Classic fans lump us in with Modern fans and Modern fans treat us like we're delusional. Of course, that doesn't excuse the vitriolic behavior, of which ALL the groups of the fandom are guilty of.
I miss when Sonic as a character was kindhearted but confident and a bit cocky. I miss when there was more to the stories than just "Looks like Eggman's up to his usual tricks again." I miss the world building, the character archs, the high stakes.
I miss when Sonic's friends were more than just glorified cheerleaders. I miss Crush40s cheesy but really catchy and fun J-Rock. I miss when there were enemies that weren't just Egg Pawns and Motobugs. I miss Sonic striking wacky poses and breakdancing.
I miss everyone saying "long time no see." I miss when cutscenes actually had action going on in them. I miss when Classic Sonic iconography wasn't shoved in for the sake of nostalgia baiting. I miss when the games took pride in their cheesy over-the-top shounen-like storylines.
