Friends near and far: I am perhaps the last remaining member of my generation who has never seen a Star Wars film. I am going to begin watching them, in order of release date, this weekend. You’d better believe I will be live-tweeting. Please join me on this journey.
Wow, I was not expecting to meet Darth Vader so early!
already feeling a deep affection for R2D2 and this weird tank full of misfit toys
Obi-Wan.... haven’t heard THAT name in YEAAAARS
“You won’t ever find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy” is an INCREDIBLE line
Made it to the end of the flight from the Death Star. On the whole... I’m not a battle person, but did we need to spend *so* much time in the garbage chute?
They’re just gonna let Luke fly this mission?! My dude is like 17 and nobody here knows him except his moustached buddy from back home, and that’s enough?!
Darth Vader is out here in one of these planes too?!?
Give Chewbacca a commendation!!!
One down!! Cultural touchstones that now make way more sense:
- “I find your lack of faith disturbing”
- “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for”
- “The force is strong with this one”
- Kessel Run, the name of an opposing team at my weekly bar trivia session

Opening of Empire Strikes Back strikes a real nice ominous tone, I’m into it! I don’t know anything about filmmaking, but is the lighting etc. much more interesting than ANH?
As an aside, I am quite uncomfortable with the droid/“master” setup that seems to be the norm in this universe
To wit: C3PO is fluent in SIX MILLION forms of communication
Got 20 minutes into ESB over the weekend and then got sleepy, but folks, we are
back at it again tonight
stay tuned for the not-terribly-interesting observations of a first-time Star Wars viewer! We pick it up at the top of Empire Strikes Back.

Excuse me, is this space station just *in the shape of Darth Vader’s helmet?* Why???
ALL I want after 40+ days of social distancing is a big-ass hug from Chewbacca. Warm-fuzzy levels off the charts
R2D2 can just have his head exposed to space like that?? Is that safe?? (Obviously the answer is yes but I am on my second glass of wine and that is heightening my concern for various characters)
NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS
It is astounding to me that you could receive directions to *a whole planet* and just figure, yeah, I’ll find what I’m looking for when we get there! It’s a WHOLE PLANET and you just happen to land in Yoda’s forest?
YODA IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN I IMAGINED, I am sorry to report that all of your impressions have been trash for decades
“There is... a great disturbance in the force” !!!
Do! Or do not. There is no try. !!! My cultural competency score is surely going to increase by at least 10% for having seen these films
To wit: “Judge me by my size, do you?”
Han Solo update, 3.5 hours into the series: the coiffed hair has abated and I’m willing to admit that I am into it
HOLY SHIT Vader is inviting our heroes to dine with him?!? Genuinely stunning turn of events
Boba Fett is just... this dude? And Lando Calrissian is just *this* dude? These people are a lot less interesting than you all led me to believe, tbh
THESE are the circumstances under which we get “I love you” / “I know”??? As Han Solo is on his way to get... frozen?? I thought surely it was before some shoot-em-up sequence or something (although that will probably still be the case, huh)
Enormously into the aesthetic of Lando Calrissian’s world, though, I’ve gotta say. This whole sequence has been an absolute treat, both in the all-white halls and in the foggy chamber where everybody’s a silhouette. Genuinely don’t know how this will end!
Last 45 minutes of this film are absolutely incredible, nonstop action, a bunch of plots I’m invested in, a bunch of huge reveals, wow wow wow
10/10 would watch again, that was an absolute pleasure, I am now highly invested in this narrative. See ya in a few days for Return of the Jedi

The 20th Century Fox opening theme gives me reason enough to share my all-time favorite YouTube video:
Excuse me, Jabba the Hut has... a robot torture dungeon???
And presumably he’s going to have this captive dancer killed and eaten?? This is DARK?!?
Ah yes, we’re cutting from Leia imprisoned by terrifying sadist Jabba the Hutt to... a herd of space bison roaming the space sand dunes
