This is Sixth thread on Basics of astrology in #Lockdown2.

Tap the Quoted Tweet to read 5th thread if you haven't read it.

This thread will deal with many concepts of Panchang (Yoga, Karna, Tithi etc.), and some other things which would keep coming in my mind. https://twitter.com/AstroAmigo/status/1247505615229841415
Lesson 1.1

In modern astrological calculations, only 27 Nakshatras are used which I told in 5th thread. Each of those Nakshatras is considered a wife of Moon with whom Moons spends (almost) equal amount of time due to a bane. However, there is additional Nakshatra called Abhijit
Lesson 1.2

Abhijit was the only brother of 27 wives of Moon and has been mentioned in historical texts like Mahabharat. So, it was the only male Nakshatra. . It is used in some astrological tools even now. Example - Sarvatobhadra Chakra, Chandra and Surya Kalanal Chakra etc.
Lesson 1.3

Abhijit Nakshatra is placed between Uttarashadha (Nakshatra No. 21) and Shravan (Nakshatra No. 22) Nakshatras. It occupies last 3°20' of Uttarashadha and first 53'20" of Shravana Nakshatra. Thus, arc of Abhijit is 4°13'20" wide. It is very important in Muhurta.
Lesson 2.1

12 degrees of Longitudinal difference between Sun & Moon make Tithi. There are 30 Tithis in a Lunar Month.

The period from New to Full Moon is called bright half/Shukla Paksha.
The period from Full to New Moon is Dark Half/Krishna Paksha.

Each Paksha has 15 Tithis.
Lesson 2.2

Tithis are classified into five types:

1) Nanda: 1,6,11th Tithis
2) Bhadra: 2,7,12th Tithis
3) Jaya: 3,8,13th Tithis
4) Rikta: 4,9,14th Tithis
5) Poorna: 5,10,15th Tithis

Sarvatobhadra Chakra, a useful tool, keeps Poorna Tithi in centre surrounded by other Tithis.
Less 2.3

Nadna Tithis give happiness, considered auspicious for works like coronation/other happy occasions.

Bhadra Tithis: Good for altruistic (i.e. Philanthropic), social and pious works. They give gentle life.

Jaya means victory. They give suuccess, victory, winning etc.
Lesson 2.4

Rikta (रिक्त) means blank/emptiness. No auspicious/crucial work should be undertaken in this Tithi. All Rikta Tithis are avoided for Muhurta.

Poorna Tithis are good for accomplishments but 30th of Krishna Paksha should be avoided. Poorna Tithis are at centre of SBC.
Lesson 2.5

One thing I would like you learn/revise is the span of Rashis in sky.

If a Graha is at 252°7', then it is between 240°0'0" and 269°59'59" which falls in Sagittarius (धनु) Rashi. It would be 240° + 12°7' that is, Graha is advanced in Sagittarius (धनु) Rashi by 12°7'.
Lesson 2.5 continued

Here, it means that if a Graha is at 252°7' then it has crossed 8 Rashis (uptil 240°) and has advanced by 12°7' in the Ninth Rashis, which is Sagittarius (धनु).

Look for such degrees in Kundali option of Hindu Calendar App I asked to install.
Lesson 2.6

A new Lunar Month begins when Sun and Moon are at same longitude (or in common terms, same degree).

I tapped "Panchang" option in Hindu calender app & saw that at 7:54 AM on 23 April, Amavasya would end and First Tithi (new lunar month) would begin. See next tweet.
Lesson 2.6 continued.

Then I tapped Kundali option in Hindu calender app, entered 23 April 2020 date and 7:54 AM time keeping my location Delhi.

I can see that tropical positions of Sun and Moon are exactly the same. So, here new Lunar Month commences.

See next tweet.
Lesson 2.6 continued

Sun & Moon are at 33°24' in above image which puts them in 30° + 3°24' that is in 2nd (Taurus) Sign.

Above images contains tropical positions. For actual positions, subtract 24°8' from their positions. It would bring their positions to be 9°16' (in Aries).
Lesson 2.7

Tropical positions are used in Western Astrology. But in Vedic Astrology, we use Sidereal (fixed) positions, and hence have to reduce 24°8' from their every value to find fixed position of a Graha. This correction factor is also mentioned in 2nd image of Lesson 2.6.
Some people look for tweets after the above lesson. They can click the quoted tweet wherein I have explained details of Panchang in over 100 tweets. You will learn many concept in this thread of over 100 tweets.
