Ten years ago (almost to the day) I moved into my first London flatshare in Southfields. One of the lads would always be at a wedding at the weekend, which made me think he was the most popular person in the world, which in turn made me want to be his friend.
But it turned out he was the drummer in a wedding band. He told me the wedding band helped pay the rent, and he was in another band which he hoped would make it one day. Then he said the words we always dread: "I can play you some of our songs for you if you like?”
I made up the best excuse I could on the spot – I think I said I had some toast on the go - and told him to send me the music and I’d get round to listening to it. Weeks later I was hungover in bed, doing an audit of my life choices.
We lived near the Wimbledon tennis courts and Andy Murray was playing at the time. My dilemma was that I needed the fresh air for survival so I wanted the window open, but you can imagine the noise each time he won a point.
I decided to leave the window open and just give the lad’s music a go to try and drown out the caterwauling support. The music was pretty good and I still listen to it to this day, even when Andy Murray isn’t playing.
The lad and his band have done alright for themselves as well. https://twitter.com/Woodythedrum/status/1251557151941824514
