Stuck in lockdown? Come on a virtual tour of my city - Würzburg is the north of Bavaria, between Frankfurt and Munich. Let’s start at the Main River (pronounced ‘mine’) and the fortress - Festung Marienburg.
As we walk into town, we can see the Alte Mainbrücke ahead of us. Don’t be distracted, keep walking underneath the bridge then turn right to the square in front of our town hall (Rathaus). Pop in to the pretty little courtyard.
Take a moment to view the memorial for the 16th March 1945 — and the model showing Würzburg after the night when Würzburg was decimated in a bombing raid.
Then head up the street towards the cathedral (Dom), stopping for a Hörnchen (the Franconian croissant) in the traditional bakery, Brandstetter. If you like tea, visit the tea shop and buy the Würzburg edition: Residenzmischung.
Walk from the Dom along to the market square (Marktplatz) with the Falkenhaus - an impressive rococo building that houses our library.
Walk past the Falkenhaus to the lower market square. Here you’ll find the best bratwurst in the city. Geknickte. Join the queue. It’s worth it.
While you wander around, keep an eye out for @_Stolpersteine_ - small ‘stumbling stones’ that memorialise the victims of the Nazis who lives in our city and strolled these streets.
Around the corner from the Untere Marktplatz, you’d find the historic guesthouse Zum Stachel. The little courtyard is gorgeous. Take a peek inside.
Ok, back through the market square and head up the Squirrel Street - Eichhornstrasse. Note the little squirrels embedded in the pavement. If Bratwurst isn’t your thing, stop for lunch in Casa del Gusto. Next door, is an emporium for keen bakers.
Walk up to the Residenz - an imposing palace with beautiful gardens. On the left is one of 3 wineries in the city, the Staatliche Hofkeller.
Turn your back on the Residenz and walk down past the Stadttheater (undergoing renovation at present). Now you are at the second winery. @Buergerspital - stop for wine and Franconian tapas.
From here, it’s just a short walk to the Juliusspital, the last Winery and a hospital. Go through to the courtyard to the pavilion. The statues reveal its past life as a lecture hall for anatomy and pathology.
Skirt around the pavilion and you’ll find a mini vineyard which shows the geographical regions where wine is grown around the city. Sandstone, shell limestone and keuper.
Now we are heading back down to the river. Past the Alter Kranen and along to where we started.
It’s been a long day. You’ve earned your Brückenschoppen on the the bridge. A bridge wine. Enjoy that view and the atmosphere.
And here’s a thread on a wonderful discovery that I made last year in Würzburg https://twitter.com/lynn_nothegger/status/1204867263637180417?s=21 https://twitter.com/Lynn_Nothegger/status/1204867263637180417
Years ago, my kids and I made a wee video about Würzburg. Check it out to see the explanation of a Geknickte sausage.
Adding this thread on for anyone who wants more Würzburg - an autumn stroll through the vineyards to the Festung. https://twitter.com/lynn_nothegger/status/1325093849065279494
