(1)In any sector with recruitment and retention issues this is largely the norm. A job interview is a two way street - don't lose sight of that fact. A school that's no prepared to sell itself, and its policies is one I'd question as the right one for me. https://twitter.com/FakeHeadteacher/status/1251042621348339713

(2) I'd not shy away from an inadequate/RI sch. There's much to be said for the staff in these that the Ofsted doesn't say. But I'd be expecting a HT to be open and Frank about where they are, & where they are heading. If it is all smoke & mirrors, then I'd walk away.
(3) Management policies matter - Beh, marking, PM all impact your life. Don't be shy about asking what they are; decide if they meet your expectations. If you are asked to do your own detentions, I'd be expecting beh to not be ideal...
(4) ...but every other Friday, I drive a 300 mile round-trip to get my kids. Am I really going to set a detention for that evening? It's human nature - Others will be doing the same.
(5) For the foreseeable future, you won't get the tour of the school. There won't be a student panel, where you get to see the hand-picked success stories & have them interview you. You won't get to see a normal school day. These questions not only matter, they are crucial.
(6) School leaders need to adapt to this comparitively flipped narrative at interview. All involved are going to be a little more nervous & uncomfortable over video conferencing, because it's unfamiliar for all.
(7) Remember, we are all in this together.
FWIW - I've been at HT-level. Every interview I gave outside of Ed was a two-way street. It's a conversation. Because, employment *has* to be a positive relationship. You can find out more by setting people at ease.

(8) Oh, and making prospective staff a brew yourself goes a long way to say what kind of leader you are.
