Bressons DAMES DU BOIS DE BOULOGNE (1945) is a recent one I saw where he proves surprisingly good at making an Ophuls type dark romance/melodrama https://twitter.com/MichaelVarrati/status/1250960917321273344
Altman's COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN (1982) too, it edges out Nashville for my favourite from him
Fritz Lang's THE BLUE GARDENIA (1953), Joseph Mankiewiczs THE HONEY POT (1967), Dreyers GERTRUD (1964), Ernst Lubitschs ANGEL (1937)... etc
Marlon Brando's directorial one-off, ONE-EYED JACKS (1961) seems to have fallen a little by the wayside but I know it has its following and I'm amongst them despite usually being a Brando skeptic... Visually gorgeous beach western with lots of weird psychosexual undertones
FAMILY PLOT (1976) appreciation tweet
this is lowkey such a great lazy afternoon movie
continuing this thread with Renoir's LA NUIT DU CARREFOUR (1932), which is half paranoid proto-noir atmosphere chiller and half the template for Bela Tarr's career... convinced this thing would be a cult classic if it were more readily available
